Just purchased 1977 140 that has a problem with the hydralics on the rear. When nothing is attached to the 1 point, the lift bumps or jerks continuously. I beleive its sucking air from somewhere. front lift works fine with no problems. My question is, where should I check first, reservior gaskets or ??. There is a small leak around the filler plug-could it be sucking air there? Thanks for your help.

gray: Is there any position you can leave the hitch so it wont do this? Have you tried both all the way up or all the way down? If it stops this at any position, let us know?

Hugh, I can move the lever either way a small amount and it will sometimes stop the jerking temporarily. I also notice that when the lift is raised completely, it stops and then creeps up another couple of inches. Thanks for your help.

gray: Just noticed you have a suggestion of air. When you have air and equiped with fast hitch, with tractor not running and hitch about half way position jump on hitch with all your weight. If it's spongy you have air, if solid air is not your problem.

Another item I find with fast hitch is when tractor is not running either leave hitch all the way up or all the way down. That lift assist spring can create presure on system in any other position. When hitch is all the way down spring has an over center effect that reduces any presure. When all the way up bolt adjustment in end of spring stops presure. Nowhere does IH say that is a must. I just find now into 45 years with one of these, they just work a whole lot smoother if one is careful not to leave presure or load on system when not running. At least reduce it as much as possible.

cylinders with air trapped in them may act very jerky because the air acts as a spring and prevents solid fluid (incompressable) action. I'd try bleeding air out of the lift cyl. FWIW

gray: You'll notice at bottom of hydraulic lever, linkage going to touch control has an adjusting end. Sometimes these need a bit of adjustment as lever is not syncronized with rockshaft movment. Usually that is a case of rockshaft reaching end of stroke and lever trying make it go further. Unless I'm misreading you, I somehow don't think that is your problem.

How long is it since your touch control fluid has been changed? And how long since screen was cleaned? What happens if you hitch to a plow or some implement similar weight, is problem worse or better? Another item to check is spring assist for hitch, it has adjustment that can be off? The long bolt going into spring from end, if not adjusted properly can stop rockshaft before it is all the way forward. Just play with it a bit keeping close watch on changes and when they occur. Process of elimination. It may well be your touch control needs a kit, but we should explore other possibilities first. Usually the kit happens when problems occur on both valves.

Hugh, thanks for the suggestions. Lift is spongy with no load on it and does not jerk nearly as bad with implement attached. I'll try your adjustment suggestions tomorrow. If there is air trapped in system, what is proceedure for bleeding system? Thanks again for your help.

gray: Best way to remove air is with tractor running, put hydraulic rockshafts through their complete strokes about 2 dozen times. If that doesn't work, let it set over night and try again. You may need to replenish hydraulic oil as air is expelled. Remember on final filling, up to fill hole with rockshafts in rear position. To much oil in there can create problems as well.
