I have a 504 International that stopped running the other day. Traced it down to a broken wire that was going into the Resistor. Reattatched the wire and it started right up. The Resistor was in very poor condition and in the process of hooking the wire back up it broke into several peices. Went to the IH Dealer today and got a new one, it appears to be the correct one, same size, shape and bracket system. They also looked it up and said it was the correct part. I hooked it up and the Tractor will not start. I unhook it and try the old one that is all busted up (wire coil is all pulled out and everything) and the tractor starts right up. Put the new one back on and it will not start again. I tested it with a bacis continuity tester and it shows that there is no borken wires inside.

Any Ideas would be great. Thanks in advance.

Steve

Angus,

You know I got a new alt for my truck and it was junk. That might be the case here, take it back, get another and try it out again.

I"m looking at my Maunal for the 504 and is shows the Resistor next to the voltage regulator up by the dash. Mine in down mounted right on top of the coil on the side of the engine. Is this a noral variation of the wiring or could this be something that the previous owner has done?

I tried to trace the wiring but nothing matchins color wise with the book anyhow. Plus its all been repainted.

BTW I.m just up the road from you (Mason City) and I"ll take yesterdays weather anyday over today. To cold to be working on wiring....lol

Angus,

I just got off the phone with Glen a Littel Red Tractor, he will have a 504 manual for you he thought. # 402-986-1352. He has all kinds of manual, I just bought an origanl 1066 in good condition part manual for $25.00. Not bad. Good luck.

Sounds like I would use the old one and keep running. Sometime new is not always good.

Hey Sloroll,

Coming good today. I dropped the starter off at a guy in another town this morning. I come walking in and he look at it, smiles and say "Ah, IH tractor, counter clockwise, nice. I love IH, you Farm ?" I about hit the ground. He will have it done soon and I will put it on. I also got new batteries for it from a buddy who runs a Car Quest store, he took care of me, $70 a piece for those 6 volt EH series. So, with that said, I should be all set. I have to be out of town on for a while so when I am gone, all I will be doing is thinking of the 1066. Allen gave me a name of a guy who has the handles. When I am back, oil change, filters, etc. Then, think about paint this May. We still have snow in New England and we are getting more, 8" tomorrow wnight and some on Sat. I HATE WINTER. Thanks for asking. I will keep you informed.

Hey, one dumb question, left side (TA) battery, positive to solenoid, neg to positive on right side (shifter). Right side battery negitive to ground, right ? Thanks

Hi John,

You got the wiring down to an artform. Sounds like you'll be "twistin' 'er tail" before long.

That's smart. Both the starter and batteries at the same time. Also, your idea of all filters and fluids.

Start from scratch. I like that approach.

Keep us informed will ya?

Allan

Man, I'd have to drive 48 odd miles to tell you. Allan or another resident expert will tell us both soon. 72 deg. yesterday; snowing and windy today. I'm through with winter too! Sounds like you are in good hands with your equipment.

What, 72 degrees and now it is snowing, what the heck ? Where is it you live ? Crazy weather for sure, that weather keeps you sick. We have had 7, even 2, but I have not seen them together that way. Oh yah, we have had 27 way to much. See ya Sloroll, and you are right about Allen, he will know about the battery.

Sloroll, I can't say, never been. I can ask JiminIA, he lived here in Mass and now lives in Iowa. At least people out your way know what farming is. Around here, they think a petting zoo is a farm, go figure.
