I have a 1952 Farmall M and I am having trouble with the carburetor. I have just put a new carburetor kit in it along with a new float. The problem is it will not quit leaking fuel out. Every time I turn the fuel on, it fills up the bowl and then runs right out the end, the end where the choke butterfly is. I have taken this thing apart about 100 times now and put it back together with the same result. I don't get it. When I have the carburetor off I can shake it and hear the float moving up and down so I know it is not stuck. Any help would be appreciated.

Are you sure the float doesn't leak?

The short pin in the float could be the problem. I got a carb kit for my SMTA (same as M) and the float pin with it was too short. In the kit I got the needle and seat were also different so perhaps it isn"t shutting off as mentioned.

Hello Brian. I have a rebuilt carb on an "H" and when I first put it on it leaked. I discovered that the pin that holds the float was a mite too short, and it could slide sideways and allow the float to fall down into the bowl. I made a slightly longer pin and it works fine. Just a thought..... .

The float level is very critical, double check it. Also, it is possible that the needle valve and seat are faulty, even though they are new. Sometimes shaking the carb and listening for the float rattling does not tell the whole story. Try blowing into the fuel inlet while holding the carb in an upright position, you should be able to blow into it easily. Now turn the carb upside down, and blow into the inlet again. If the float, neeedle valve, and seat are functioning properly, you should not be able to blow into the inlet. If the carb passes these tests, check the float level again. The other possibility is that the carb body is cracked, in this case, the carb is probably junk.

Thanks for the tip I will try that. One more question though. Since the float level is so critical, is the a measurement to make sure it is set correctly? With the top of the carburetor off the float has an even gap all the way around. It is sitting level. Is this incorrect?

Yes, there is a measurement for the float level. It should be listed in the instuctions that came with the kit.

IT spec for the D-10 carb on the H is 1 53/64. Spec in the IH service manual is 1 27/32 (1 54/64). You have pretty good eyes if you can read 1/64 on a scale -- that small difference won't change anything anyway.

MagMan, that's why I refuse to own an IT manual. The last one I had was supposed to be a shop manual for an 856, the original owners manual had more info for maintenance than the IT shop manual. I've never bought another.
