HELLO I BOUGHT A SUPER M WITH A CHARLYNN POWER STEERING SETUP. IT'S BEEN HALF-ASSED ON THERE, THEY CUT THE TOP STEERING ROD AND THE BRACKET TO THE GAS TANK SUPPORT HAS BEEN BROKE OFF AND A METAL PLATE WELDED ON. THE COUPLERS HAVE BEN WELDED UP AND ARE VERY LOOSE. MY QUESTION IS DOES THE CHARLYNN UNIT REPLACE THE FACTORY CAST IRON BRACKET THAT THE GAS TANK BOLTS TO OR DOES THE CHARLYNN UNIT BOLT TO THAT? CAN I GET NEW COUPLERS? THANKS.

My local TSC deals with a company called force hydraulics. This company sells parts as well as the entire CHARLYNN unit for the M. They have a website. forceamerica.com Dont know if they would have what you need on hand or not and what the price would be if they did. Good luck finding what you need.

The original cast iron bracket that also holds the front of the gas tank is kept for use with the power steering unit. Those castings would break when the power steering unit is installed and the tractor hit something hard with the front end. I have had this happen to one of my tractors and I was able to find a good casting at a salvage yard.

Far as I can tell the M gage plate in Allan’s photo below is the same as the one for a Super M. And the reason the tank support casting broke on yours is because the coupling at the front of the steering motor had been welded solid. (The front coupling is a combination universal joint and slip joint)

Anyway replacement front coupling are available. I purchased a new one a couple years ago thru Bates Corp. Price was about $80 as I recall. (The rear coupling is the stock IHC steering shaft U-joint)

Note! You gotta have both the coupling and U-joint in place and working. Otherwise the motor will experience excessive thrust and side loads from the steering shaft and cause damage to both the motor and the mounting bracket, just as you discovered.

DRG,

Don't know about a Super M, but this is the Charlynn gauge plate for a M.
