My M is due soon for an overhaul job, and I wanted to ask if anyone has any advice on reboring the block to take 4 1/8 sleeves--like the ones used in the Super M.

Is is possible to do this? Are there any problems that can come from doing this? What is something like this likely to cost? Thanks for any advice!

I thought the SM came with a 4 inch flat top piston and the up date was to use the 4 inch firedome. I don't think that the 4 & 1/8th inch piston showed up until the 400 appeared. My M has the 4 and 1/8th inch firedome pistons. I haven't seen any of the JD's pull with it other than a couple of stroked G's. Just passin thru.

I'm working on a Cockshutt right now , no sleeves
from the factory but worn out . My machinist tells
me about $100 per hole for boring and sleeving to
retain same bore.

Rusty has some good comments. I’m not sure what your horsepower needs are. If your M has flat 3 7/8 pistons, the 4 inch overbore step pistons will amaze you with what that M will do. Allen probably won’t believe this, but I used to pull a 3-14” plow about 7” deep (pliers depth) in sandy-loam soils all day long in 3rd gear. If you really need the power, you might want to consider swapping the block for a block that will already take the 4 1/8 inch piston like one from a super M. Heads can make a big difference too, especially the high altitude, high compression ones.

Ya captain, up in southwest Iowa where I was a yonker, we pulled 3-14's all day long with the M. Kinda figured it was made for that. The H pulled 2-14's. At one time Dad had 2 M's and an H and it looked like a flock of bees out there plowing. Seemed like we were really tearing it up. Three tractors pulling 7 bottoms. Sounds kinda silly now, but back then we were sitting in tall cotton. Later, Harley

Early last spring a friend of mine invited me to come help plow a few acres of bean ground. So I took my 1940 M, which does have the 4 inch pistons, and also a fresh valve job. The only plow I have is an IH 2-14s, which really isn't a match for the M, but you do what you do. Plowing as deep as possible, third gear was a breeze for the M. I did make a half round using fourth gear, just to see if the M had it, and she only complained just a little. I think if there had been a 4 btm. handy I would have hooked on just to see what would happen.

I agree with Rusty on reboring that block. If you have enough power to create wheel slippage,
more power will not help. Hal

It is possible to do it. You would need to completely strip the block and then take it to a good automotive machine shop. I don't know what it would cost. I would also recommend against doing this, it would only be money spent for something you don't need. I would recommend rebuilding the engine using the overbore kit for the M, which will give you 4 inch pistons, rather than the 3 7/8 which was standard. An M equipped with 4 inch high compression pistons, and properly tuned, will give some pretty amazing performance, and you will not have jeopordized the integrity of the block.

You do not need to bore it for 4 1/8 pistons. Just pull sleeves & hone block & install 4 1/8 pistons.Years later if it needs overhauled then bore it for 4 1/8 sleeves. It works I did it.

I bought the how to rebuild your farmall M motor VHS tape from this site at Xmas and the good ole boys on there say that the IH dealer has pistons to run right in the bore with out the sleeve. JON
