I've dropped it out of the belly. It's leaking from the area that enters the trans. where the driving dog attaches. There is a plate that surrounds the part that attaches to the dog. It has three bolts holding it on. I've taken them out. I have tried to pull that plate away to get at a gasket or seal of some kind. It comes away from the trans. about a .25 of an inch and stops. What must be done to get it off and am I looking for a gasket, seal or both.....I want to stop the leaking....please help me stop the leaking....Thanks.

Well...I put it in gear, locked up the brakes and went to pulling on the pipe wrench. It never budged..(are we sure this will come off counter clockwise (right hand thread))..but I did walk the back end of my tractor all around the shop....any better ideas? I'd heat it up but I'm afraid I'd set the thing on fire.....help..... ..

Yes, the countershaft goes directly to the PTO, and the PTO turns clockwise when viewed from the rear. So the yoke has to have right hand threads to keep from coming off under load.

I have used a brass punch and hammer with success. A little heat would not hurt, bu tyou should not need it.

Seems like there is a lock bolt in the center. I guess if so you would have seen it.

I hooked a pipe wrench to it and lifted it with a Hi-Lift Jack. I pulled off the belt pulley assembly and put a wrench in the gears with a old towel to jam them. It took a couple of minutes of messing around and click, click, pop.

I pulled one off of a 1942 H and it came off by finger pressure. Go figure.

High Lift Jacks are great for rooting around on red tractors. Be careful though. The handle can knock you out. I know. I got popped by one three winters ago. Made my head ring for a week. Had trouble eating french fries. Wacked my jaw.

Be careful! Old Red can hurt you. Think about it first!!!!

Being as you have it out, you'd have to take the main cover off the pump and try to block the pump gears to get the drive link off. someone correct me if I'm wrong...CRS this AM.

Your problem is a worn out seal on the tranny shaft. And you gotta unscrew the drive coupler from the end of the transmission shaft to get the retainer and seal off.

The coupler is threaded onto the shaft extension with standard right hand threads. To unscrew it engage the PTO clutch, then grab the PTO shaft with a pipe wrench to keep it from turning. Then take another pipe wrench and grab the coupler - or stick a suitable piece of bar stock in the coupler slot - and go at it. It'll probably be difficult to get the coupler broken free, but once it starts it'll spin easily off the threaded end of the tranny shaft.

Once you get the retainer and old seal out, replacing the seal is a simple matter. Note that a new seal will likely be only about 1/2 as thick as the original one. However the new thinner seal will work fine.

did you unscrew the drive coupler first? i believe it turns counter clockwise to come off. then the plate with seals in it will come off. hope this helps.
