Greetings Farmall & IH fans

I am looking to get an 856 tractor. I would like to know all the specs before I decide thats what I want. I am looking for the type of info that can be found on a sales brochuer. For example:weight, hydraulic gpm/psi,#of gears, tire size,hp. the typical stuff. The reason I want to know this is so when I go look at one and it has a fast hitch on it I know weather it should or not. I did not grow up running one of these there for I don't know if what I see in pictures are factory or add on's.

If anyone knows where I can find this type of info on the net It would be helpful. Basically I wan't to step back in time and have a sales man tell me the reason I should buy a new one and anwser any questions I have.

The local dealer is useless when it comes to this.
thanks
wayne

Wayne,
Here's some info for you on the 856 diesel. PTO HP 100, drawbar HP 90, engine 407CID 6 cylinder with 4.321" bore and 4.625" stroke (dry sleeves), 11L-15 front tires and 18.4-38 rear tires are standard equipment. Dry weight for the diesel (no fluid or weights) is 9,761 pounds assuming standard size tires. Transmission 8 speeds forward, 4 reverse (you can multiply this times two if it has a TA). Hydraulics: 9 & 12 GPM pumps, plus a 3 GPM pump for the TA. I don't know the PSI of the pumps. Hope this helps.

Not sure I agree about the tires. Many of them have 16.9x38's and 18.4x34's on the rear. 9.5x15's on six-bolt rims are the most common fronts, while many have 10x16's on 8-bolt rims. Your hydraulic numbers are wrong, too, The hitch and auxillery valves are supplied by the 12 gpm pump. I want to say that this system was originally equipped with an 1800 psi relief valve, but it may have been a 2000 psi valve. Bigger and later tractors could have 2200, 2300, and 2500 psi relief valves, which will screw right into an 856, so the only way to know what you've got is to get it on a flow-rater. The MCV pump (steering, TA, brakes, and lube is supplied by the 9 GPM pump. The PTO unit had the 3 gpm pump. Here are some other specs- 42 gallon fuel tank, 1000 RPM single shaft PTO unit or 540/1000 dual-shaft unit (most common), one or two hyd vavles, fast hitch or 3-point. There was also a 856 Custom, basically a stripped-down 856 to compeate with the JD 4000. These have a 37 gallon fuel tank, a single element air cleaner (no inner saftey filter), and only one headlight in each fender.

Wayne, I have a brochure for 856 tractor ( also own an 856 , not for sale though )I am willing to scan the brochure, also photos of fast hitch and 3 pt. hitch for comparison and e-mail images of them to you. In your reference to fast hitch, the 856 was available with fast hitch or 3 point hitch. Adapters were (are) available to install into the fast hich arms to allow mounting 3 pt. equipment on the fast hitch. Also required installing upper link bracket. Many times a seller will state a tractor has 3 pt. hitch when in fact it is a fast hitch with 3 pt. adapters. Factory 3 pt. works better. Reply to this post if interested. Show e-mail address so I can send to you. Weldon
