Went to move the the A in the barn when it was very cold and it started right up but when I put it in gear and let the clutch out it would just kill the motor. The gear shift was very sluggish. Also was not able to rock the tractor by pushing on the rear wheels. Could it be stuck in reverse and a forward gear at the same time. Any ideas? Thanks.

Thanks for the responses. It has warmed up some here in Mich. but the tractor is 200 miles north. They all make sense and the next time I'm up north I hope it will be warmer and I'll change the fluids in the spring. Happy New Year.

I'm betting on water (ice) in the gear oil also. Wait til it warms up and drain the transmission/differential fluid and the final drive fluid. Over the years condensation causes a suprising amount of water to build up in these fluids, especially if the tractor has not been used hard enough to get hot. I use 80/90W grease. Dave.

My A sometimes dose not pull 1st or 2nd out of gear all the way and when you go to another gear it locks up the transmison. If I go to the last gear I was in and pull it just past center it will disengage. Other times I have to take the top off set everything back to netral and reinstall.

I've had the same problem and I'll bet if you pull the shifter cover off of the tranny, it's a block of ice. Ron

You could have ice frozen in the final drives and/or transmission if it has been really cold. Best let her warm up some before trying again as something could go "Snap, Crackle, Pop" and it won't be your Rice Crispies.
