Will the PTO shafts from a 1940 Farmall M and a 1951 Farmall M interchange? It seems like the 1940 shaft would be lighter, is this true? I am trying to save weight for pulling, but maintain a working PTO for stock classes. Any other ideas?? Any other good ideas to lose weight without rebuilding the whole tractor out of aluminum?!!

The PTOs in Ms through early 1941 are "slot" driven later ones are "spline" driven to put one of the early ones in later tractor transmission countershaft will have to be changed. The flat type PTOs in early 1941 through early 1943 Ms are spline driven and should work but I have never seen if done. The steering gear cover from M is perfect fit for PTO opening and makes it look factory original.

I don't know why it is , but it seems that a lot of people who respond on this site never answer the questions asked. Yes, you can interchange the PTO's. Also the old style is a little lighter.

The PTO was optional equipment, not standard. You should be allowed to pull in any "stock" class without it. The same goes for the hydraulic belly pump, and the belt pulley unit. If you eliminate these items, I think most rules do require they be replaced with a "factory" cast iron cover, which may not be easy to find.
