I just completly overhauled my super M. i also put a new battery in and new wire harness and i tried to start it and it wouldn't turn over very fast. then after a couple of revs the starter started smoking and burned up. was the starter just bad and it didn't have enough balls to start the tractor or is something else wrong. I know i need to buy a new starter, but what else could be the problem?

Is it 6 or 12 volt? If it is 12 volt, it should have spun it over easy. If 6-volt, you may have had a bad starter, poor cables, poor battery or combination of above.

Take out the spark plugs, grab a crank (or the fan) and see how easy it turns over. You should be able to roll it over fairly easy. If not, you probably have some bearings that are too tight. If it rolls over easy, then you have electrical problems including starter, cables, and battery. If it is 6-volt, I’d convert it to 12 volt.

When I overhaul and engine, I check, check, check to make sure things are turning the way they should. After just the crank is in, it should take a “bump” to get it rolling and then roll easy. If not, the main bearings are too tight. After each piston is in, it should take just a little bit more effort than it did before. If it locks up or takes a lot more effort to turn after one piston is installed you have a tight bearing or a bent rod. You shouldn’t even notice when you put the camshaft in. Before you put the head on the engine should roll over smooth, with minimal effort needed to overcome the friction resistance.

DJ I would have to disagree with the cowman I have cverhauled more engines than I could count. If you have to jurk them to start them they are to tight. It is trun that some of the SM, SMTA, 400, 450's turned over hard but most will start on the first cylinder up. Where I had the most problem was the guy did not want to spend money for go battery and cables and found the best thing for cables was clean and dry. Had to tun up an M one time the guy said don't touch the battery because it is ok,,, you said it the battery looked good but the ascide under the grease he had eat the grease untill I showed him what was going on he would never believe it.

DJ if you got all the bearings up close like .002 it will be tight. Did you have a little end play on the crank, it needs a little. Cam bushings if you put them in I always made sure the cam turned free. rist pins. If you have a hand crank see how it turns by hand, should be able to turn it with the fan by hand. Just some thoughts.

newly overhauled motor might be a little tight. not uncommon to have to pull start the first time.
