I have a probably stupid question. I'm more John Deere than Internationals (GO 4020's!!!) Well my dad has a 1939 H. Does the serial number tell the number produced. Like on Two cylinder John Deere's if your serial nomber is 143, You have the 143 tractor in that model. Are h's like that? Our serial number is 5843 or somthin like that I havent checked in a while. I am hoping to restore it if it'll still run. It's been sitting for about 4 years. Your help would be nice. Also, my uncles 1456 is the main tractor on my grandma's farm.

Infogatherer,
Yes, the serial #'s for H's did go in consecutive order, however IH started at # 501 for both the M & the H series. This would mean that your fathers H was the 5,342nd H to be built. It definately would be worth restoring the machine if its pretty much complete. There aren't too many of these early '39 H's of M's around, and the '39's do have some distinctive features to them. Good luck!

ATW is correct that the first serial was 501, so yours was the (5843-500)=5343th one built. Sort of, as I have heard there was an occasional gap in the serials -- but that is as close as you can get.
