39' Famall A, can I put an electric starter on it

Looking @ buying a 39' Farmall A from a local man...tractor runs good, but, he has his boy tow him behind another tractor to "pop-start" it...I have had hand-crank-start Farmalls in the past & I really like the electric starter feature...

Can I just bolt an electric starter on this? I don't much care about a charging system, I can charge up the battery from time to time like I do w/ all my other tractors that don't charge anymore...

Thanks for input & info.

Josh: I'm surprised no one suggested leaving as is. If it is a 39 Farmall A with no hole in torque tube for a starter, it would be one of the more rare Farmalls. I think there were only roughly 1,000 of these built. That is rare for a Farmall. Keep it original, you may find it is worth good dollars.

Funny thing I looked at one just like that yesterday. It had a home made battery mounting on it and I ask why since it was just like the one you are looking at. The Owner said that the man that he bought it from was going to put a combo generator/starter on it.

These work fine on small engines but I am not sure if one would work on an "A". It would be a simple thing to do if it would work.

Josh, If you"re looking at a 39 model, it is doubtful that it has a place in the torque tube for a starter if it is not already equipped with a starter. You can install an electric starter, but it would entail changing the torque tube to one with a starter mount, and you would also have to add a fly wheel ring gear which is not that big a deal, but does again require splitting the tractor.

Does it have a place to mount a starter? It would be on the right side of the torque tube, just behind the engine. Some 39's had torque tube without this if it came from the factory without a starter. These engines start easy with the hand crank by the way. Also, if this tractor came without starter you probibly don't have the choke rod to operate the choke from the operators seat. Dave.
