H transmission

A few years ago, we had a '49 Farmall H that used to set around. Whenever we'd drive it down the road, we'd have to hold it in 5th gear or it'd pop out. Someone told me that the transmission needed adjusting, and I was just curious if this was really the case, or if there was more major work involved.

And yes, I did end up selling that Farmall H (we have too many tractors as it stands already), but I held out until a restorer/collector came to check it out. I wasn't about to sell it to anyone who'd tear it apart!

Thanks and have a good weekend.

I would say it was a combination of a worn 5th gear and your Ball/Spring seats worn or unlubricated. 5th gear gets pounded very hard and the teeth get worn away after years and years of hiway gear use. I would venture a seriously worn 5th gear.

I had the same prob with mine. An old timer told me the high speed bearing needed to be replaced (Now I'm trying to remember 30 years back) It was an easy job. I removed the hydrolic pump and the bearing was towards the front of the trany and easy to exchange. $5 Or so for the bearing and never a prob again.
