10-20 carb question

I replaced a bad cork float in the carb of my 10-20. Every thing is peachy, it runs well and sounds like....well it's that sound that keeps us doing what we do. My concern is this, to keep the new float from sticking in the down position I had to shave (sand)a thin amount from the side of the float opposite of the brass attachment arm. The float comes new with some sort of coating on it. To make the float work freely I removed this coating as I shaved it to fit. Did I seriously limit the life and or usefulness of the new float? Should I have coated it with something after I shaved it? If so with what? Thanks ahead of time if you can help.

I think this new gas raises heck with the cork floats. I had to soder a brass one onto my float arm. If you removed the coating you might have trouble. However dont take my word wait for more answers.

I know noting about machineing so bear with me on this. With the machinist "brainiacks" out there that can fashion a hit and miss engine from whatever they find in the scrap pile (these guys are amazing)you"d think someone could take a like density material that is impervious to gas, solvents etcetera, using an original float as a template and fashion floats that are infalable. I would pay $$ for a float I would not have to worry about!!
