driving to the inlaws an hour away. we come into town and i spy something shiney sitting on the dealers lot. made the wife do a u-turn and there's a 766 sitting 3 rows back from the road...don't know how i saw it but i did :>} nobody in sales is in today. parts man gets me a business card with a cell phone # and i call. wife asks how much i'm gonna spend. i said no more than $5k. gentleman answers and i inquire. he say $3k! now i'm in trouble! didn't get the serial # so i don't know what year it is. very straight 766 D. good tires, clutch and t/a good, sheetmetal all perfect. no rust but faded paint. never had a loader on it. all lights there and working. one owner, 8000hrs, time for rebuild but still plenty of power, i got to drive it around. what do you all think?

thanks for all the input guys. i knew it was a steal, just had to reasure myself. i have a 706 gas w/ a loader and cab and a WD allis so this would be a step up and some fun all at the same time. it can clunk out on me on the way home and i wouldn't care, that just means i get to rebuild it! looks like one stout little machine though! atleast my wife agrees, i certainly don't need it but it's too nice to pass up! i'll keep you guys posted later this week if the bank gives me some money.

caseyc, A 766 is the same platforn as a 966/1066 if memory serves me correctly So Size to Hp ratio is excellent. Will handle most 6 row equipment, batwing shredders, can be haulled short distances with a 3/4 or 1T truck amd HD tandem axle, dually trailer. OK now ask yourself this ..... . Why are 80-100 Hp tractors so popular today EVEN worn out ones???..... ..
Because they can be bought for little money. ($3to 6K) put ($10 to 15K) in them in refurbishment, Still!, It is less than 20k Go price a New one!!!! it is a barganat with the reburb cost.
Hence I would buy it! with plans on refurb. Use it, if she runs for a yr or two, then that is GRAVY. Hope this helps
Later,
John A.

Casey,

Sounds like me and my 686.

Bought if for a song; absolutely EVERYTHING on the tractor was shot; nothing worked and it took a small fortune to get the tractor right again.

Would I buy that 766? Yeah, probably would. :>)

That price seems rather low, I would check it out real good before I bought it, might be something wrong that you can't see, especially if it's sitting three rows back. I don't mean to be discouraging, just trying to make sure you don't get taken to the cleaners.

I bought a 656 gas from a dealer. Thought the salesman said they would fix hydraulics. Nope, had to pay for that myself. After using it I realized it need engine, clutch and TA. Thought dealer should have paid some on that too. Wife said sell itas she didnt have any money to fix it up. Sold it for about half of what I paid for it.

I liked the tractor and was thinking of swapping
out the gasser and putting in a diesel. It may be you have a bargain and can afford to fix it up if need be.
