Generator working?

1946 H recently acquired without all wires hooked up on generator. Took care of that problem and polorized.
Resting voltage is normal, when running with voltmeter across battery terminals jumps mostly 12+ to 13+ but sometimes drops to 8 volts. Sound normal or a problem?

Tractor is converted to 12 volt battery with appropriate distributor ignition changes. I am of belief generator and regulator are factory original (kinda think remainder of tractor might be also).

Any thoughts ?

You say it has a alternater on it, is it a delco one wire? If so all you need is a small resistor in line and go direct to the battery, the delco one wire has a internal regulater, that is what most go to when converting. Do not hook the 12 volt alternater to the original regulater. Remember if not already done you have to change all lights to 12volt also. Before you start it say the voltage is 12 after starting and rev it up to kick the alternater in the voltage should jumt to 12 1/2 to 13 1/2volts and stay there not go up and down sounds like you have a regulater problem

Don't know nothin' about the readings but I also have an M that I converted to 12v The only change I made was to add a resitor before the coil

Thanks Nebraska - already done that (kept coil cool).

That tractor would have been 6 volt positive ground from the factory, so the regulator can't be original. Those voltage fluctuations don't sound normal.
A couple things come to mind to look for: Bad ground on the regulator, intermittent regulator or brushes in the generator making intermittent contact.

Red, thanks for response. Supposing the regulator is original? Maybe it's never been connected since 12 volt battery installed.

You can put a 12 volt regulator on the generator, and get 12volts out of the system. However, the output is pretty puny. I did this on a JD B, and I have to charge the battery occasionally. You should check with a shop that rebuilds generators for the appropriate modifications.

Thanks for all input. Have found a shop that will convert gen to 12 volt and that way, will know for sure if it is working with current setup.
