I was wondering if any of you have ever adjusted the fingers on a pressure plate or does it make more sense to just get a rebuilt one?

I had a problem with my H clutch release levers going out of adjustment and not releasing the clutch when I stepped on the pedal. I adjusted the levers so they had about 1/8" to 1/16" clearance (I forget what the spec is so check your manual), tightened the locking nuts down and the clutch has been fine ever since. It may be difficult to get all the fingers at just the right clearance but having the clearance even on them is important. For the H, I rotated the engine by locking in the belt pulley drive and turning the hub the pulley bolts on to.

Has anyone ever tried to buy pressure plate springs from IH or anywhere else? Available? That is the main problem as long as the plate is OK. Sometimes I have to build up worn release fingers with weld if they are severely worn.

Just purchased a pressure plate, disc, and throw out bearing for an IH Cub from the Case/IH dealer. Drove 60 miles to pick it up.

Was I Pi-----ed when I took the pressure plate out of the carton. The fingers were not adjusted correctly - one was about 3/8 inch lower than the other two. To make matters worse the manufacturer had put lock tight on the "cheap quality" adjusting screws. Broke one side off of two of the screws trying to remove them. I replaced the screws with bolts from NAPA.

So to answer your question. Yes you can adjust the fingers - not much of an operation. I have recently adjusted the pressure plate fingers in the tractor on two tractors, the Cub and a WC Allis Chalmers. The biggest problem is rolling the motor over 1/3 turn. Hand crank works best.

Perhaps. I took my advise from the Farmall Cub web site. The advise was to replace the pressure plate when you replace the throwout bearing. Reason. The throwout bearing is carbon disk and if the fingers on the pressure place are rough they will eat up the new throwout bearing in a hurry.

When I broke the Cub the throwout bearing was well scored, the pressure plate finger rough and the clutch disc well worn. In any event the throwout bearing was the most costly item.

I'm not Peeved at the price just the care - quality taken by the manufacturer. I did check prices before I purchased the clutch parts from Case/IH.

I am not saying you should not have replaced the parts and alot of people like to keep there money local and buy from the dealer. Alls I am saying is there is a lot of good aftermarket parts avalible these days and it never hurts to look into them. CaseIH parts arent always the best either. Just the other day I had to buy a coil cap becuase I was out at the moment. They sold me a cap from caseIH that was the same part # and same part. I buy them aftermarket at half the price everytime I get them. And also the people at the cub site are the best and I ask and listen all the time when they give me advice.I guess I just think people should save that extra dolar in there pocket when ever they can. Cant blame me for that. JON

I to almost always use after market parts and with very good success. I usually get them from the local auto parts dealer. In this case neither NAPA or Federated could supply the clutch parts. I then ordered the clutch parts from one of the discount tractor supply firms. I was promised the parts in three days. 10 days later no parts. I called the firm again and spoke with the same sales person. The sales person had gone on vacation and had not processed the order. They did not have the throw out bearing but would immediately send the pressure plate, disk and back order the throw out bearing. I canceled the ordered and went to the Case/IH dealer.

If the surface of the pressure plate is good, and the sping tension is good, AND you know he correct spec. for the finger height, there is certainly nothing wrong with adjusting them!

Furthermore, I have encountered "rebuilt" units with improperly adjusted fingers.

It is a good idea to check every clutch you work with. Even if you do not have the spec. for the finger height, you can at least verify that they are all even, which is IMPORTANT for proper clutch operation.
