I have a 1970 544 farmall deisel. I new these are a little cold blooded when i bought it but it was a steel. I have completely restored the tractor and i love it. I would like to optimize it"s starting though as when it gets cool she already needs a shot of either at 55 degrees. It has a block heater. I beleive some thing may be off in the fuel delivery system that may be making it harder to start than needed. Please ANY advice on this from ya all would be appreciated. I will post pics in a few days of this beutiful tractor.

I will ask you two questions did you have the starter rebuilt and do you have new batterys in it. The starter may be dragging and you don"t relize it. also find the place on your fuel cut off where it running wide open and try starting there.

I have not had the starter rebuilt. It does have new batteeries and now that you mention it it does seem to turn over rather slow. The batts in it are 2 standard (cheap ) 6 volts that the seller picked up at the local farm supply. What type , size of batteries do you recommend?

Dave,

An old trick I learned long ago is to advance that pump ever, ever so slightly (just a tiny touch, now) for cold weather operation. Makes all the difference in the world in how they start during cold temps.

However, it does make 'em flare and throw a little grey smoke at wide open throttle.

I wanna see da pictures!

Allan

I hope I'm not too late to get into this discussion. I have a 1968 Farmall 544 diesel. The fuel control knob has three positions: All the way in --engine running, all of the way out--shut-off, two thirds of the way out--excess fuel for starting. The 544 gas uses one 12 volt battery. The 544 diesel uses two 6 volt batteries. I don't know the group number of the batteries but they should each be 600 cold cranking amps or better. Check your battery cables. If someone swapped in a lesser guage after-market cable, the starter may not be getting the amperage it needs.
