IH Wide Front for H/M questions/worth

First a question that bugs me: When did IH change the linkage placement on the wide front ends they made for the M? I know the earlier ones were witht the linkage out front, and the later ones had it in the back, but I can never find out when the change was made....

Second question: What's an original IH wide front for an H or M with the linkage out in front worth? I know it depends on what kind of shape it's in, how wore it is, etc, but let's just say this one could be on the tractor today and used in the fiel as soon as you had the front wheels back on.....

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

I have a 1954 SMTA that has always been in the family and was purchased new with an IH wide front end with the arms our in front.

I also have a 1942 M with a Norden wide front end with the arms behind the axle. It came from the dealer new with the wide front end on it.

It is my understanding that IHC changed the wide front to the lincage behind the axel with the super series. All of the wide fronts on the super H"s and super M"s that I have seen were of this type. The going rate seems to be from $400 to $1000 depending on the condition and who"s selling.

Here in Ontario they go anywhere from $500-$1500, it dont matter if the linkage is in the front or back, and it depends on what condition its in. I just have a swartz on my M

Farmall dumped the out front wide front linkage versions sometime in the early 40's. They were found to be a major adjustment problem requiring constant cast and camber adjustments. Wide front values are like the value of anything else, it is all tied to your ability to find a buyer. I have sold them for $500 and others for $700.

They did? Really? In the early 40s you say?

IH only kept the out front design for two or three years? Boy, that was fast! Didn't know that bit of info.

Well, I'll be darned.

Hmmm, We must have gotten cheated by IH then, 'cause we bought two brand spankin' new wide front ends in 1951 that had the tie rods out front with the offset steering knuckles and the drop in pins. Ordered both with the heavy 1/2" adjustment plate. Did they just sell us new old stock, or something?

Who had trouble with the caster and camber adjustments on a front tie rod IH front end? Did ya happen to get their names? Because, they are definitely strangers to me...

Oh, and by the way, just where are the caster and camber adjustments on an IH out front wide front end anyway? Our front ends sure didn't have any C&C adjustment. Now, I know we got cheated! Dag-Nabit!!

Well now wait a minute here, let's see. Where are the caster and camber adjustments on any tractor wide front end? I sure can't see 'em from where I'm standing. :>(

I realize I live wayyyyy y out in the boonies, but the first wide fronts with the tie rods behind the axle that I was aware of from IH were on the number series tractors; this is not to say they weren't out there .

Maybe they were introduced on the Supers? Heck, I dunno; all I know is row crop tractors & I'm startin' to think that I don’t know beans about them either.

Can ya help me out on this one? Should I move a little closer to town or somptin'? Am I hallucinating? Have I been out in the sun too darned long?

Maybe I should take an aspirin, lie down and then call ya in the morning? Would that work? :>)

Thanks for puttin' up with my smart-a$$ mouth,

Allan

Allan---you have me rollin on the floor laughin with that post.

Just cause you know these tractors inside and out doesn't mean that every one you have ever seen or heard of isn't a miracle child of a industrious dealer/distributor plot to peddle decades old merchandise as new in the name of a huge profit..

Boy, ya think ya know somethin, then wham....

And besides,

I think Jed just hit the wrong # on his keyboard and I think he meant to say "early 50s".

And maybe the darned things did have caster/camber problems; heck I sure don't know.

I can assure you that they drove requiring about the same physical effort that it takes to 'push' a log chain down the road. :>)

Aw, the good ol' days, kinda miss 'em.

Red,

The IH H and M wide fronts were always out front; never did change that I know of.

Add roughly $800 to a grand to the price of the tractor for a wide stanced one.

My 2 cents,

Allan

Don"t know what you"re using your M for, I have an SMTA with a loader on it-had a NFE when I bought it (felt a little unstable). Looked for original M WFE,no luck. A nieghbor put a WFE off of an IH 560 on my SMTA. Works great-very stable. (I,m not a pureist-just "get 'er done"). Paid $750.00 installed.
