This may sound like an obvious question, but here goes. I bought a little tractor a month ago and was told and seen on SN tag was a Farmall B. I went to the Old Thresher's Reunion on Labor Day weekend and seen a whole bunch of B's that were not anything like mine. Mine is a whole bunch narrower. Now what I would like to know is this thing a BN? It does not say that on SN tag, just B. If does not make any differance to me, I am just kinda curious.

I think the guy who did that should get the Darwin award not you. I am not a safetycrat by any stretch, just someone who knows physics well. Here is a post on the subject a few weeks ago.

This tractor is not going to be used for anything but a toy. I am in the process of restoring it to be a show peice. I have several CC or a Dixie Chopper I use for mowing. Anyone like the fool in that picture cannot be right, that is plumb dangerous, then to put a picture.

The difference between a B and a BN is the length of the left and right side differential Shaft Housings. As gene b said below, a B differential shaft housing is 22" & a BN is 18".
Early BN's had the FAB serial number prefix, later ones have FABN.
Both side differential shaft housings were the same length from the factory. Anything could have been changed and/or substituted over the years however.

Easy way to tell the difference between the two is to look at the seat mounting. If there is about 4" between the right-hand seat bracket and the right side fender, it's a B. If the seat mount is against the fender, it's a BN.

Follow the link to a picture of my B seat mounting. Look at the way it mounts to the top of the differential shaft housing. If yours is not like this, you may have a BN.

Red Dave,
look at Ebay itme 3839819229. Can you tell me what model that tractor is, it looks like this one of mine, except mine has dual front wheels instead of single. It has a right axle housing, but no left one.
Thanks

Appears to me to be a Farmall B that somebody hacked-up and removed the left side differential shaft and housing. It looks like a rollover waiting to happen.
If you want to buy it, I'd suggest that you get the left side differental shaft and housing from a salvage yard and put it on.

I already have one that looks like that, just trying to figure this out. Can I just buy an axle and axle housing and put it on there or is there other surprises lurking.

Yes, I think all that you would need are the differential shaft and housing from a B. Plus maybe some seals, bolts and things like that.

There probably is a stub shaft from an A in there now to mount the final drive against the differential. I think you would have to take the brake drum off the stub shaft and put it on the B shaft, but it should be a straightforward job.

Thanks for all the info. I am quite up on the bigger Farmalls, Ms and Hs. But these little ones are kinda new to me. The local dealer never sold a B tractor. They been around since the early 1900's.

Here goes some weird things. This unit is a 1949, I believe, the model number on the plate shows a model B S/N start FAB. The seat is about 4 inches from fender, the left seat bracket is on the top edge of the differntial housing. The gear reduction unit on the left wheel is bolted directly to the differential housing, is has no axle housing. What is your take on this one. I am not too up on these lttile tractors, so I am trying to find out what this little monster is. As soon as I figure how to download a picture, I will put one on here so it can be seen and maybe help me on this one.

Early BN''s had serial numbers that start FAB. Also parts get interchanged over the years. Dave.

To tell the differance between B & BN. Check out the serial number
FABN is BN
FAB is a B

Look at right hand seat support. If this is hard against the fender it is a BN, if there is a gap and seat support mounts onto foot plate it is a B.
The B is 8in wider than the BN. Otherwise no difference

If the axle housings are the same length, it's a BN. If the left one is longer than the right it's a B. If there is no axle housing on the left, and it has a narrow front end, slowly back away from somebodies ill advised mistake before you get killed.

The axle housings are 18in on EACH side on a BN. They are 22in on each side on a B.
