I just purchased a '48 Farmall H with a loader attached. I has a trip bucket. My Dad had one on a M but I don't know the model of the loader. Any ideas on the model or how I can find out? I'm sure that it is an IH loader.

This link will take you to an old picture of a model 30 mounted on Dad's H. The 31 was similiar, but the cross piece in front of the driver was turned horizontal instead of vertical as is shown. In case the link doesn't work it is http://home.centurytel.net/ejpuckett/loader%202c.jpg

Thanks, John. I put a picture on the "Help Identify" section. Believe it must be a Model 30 as you said. It looks like the one in your picture.

Can't really tell from the picture, but it is either a 30 or 31. Don't know how familiar you are with one, but the Liftall doesn't hold enough fluid to lift it all the way, so the cylinders have fluid in the upper end that is forced through the return pipe into the top of the Liftall resorvoir as the cyleinders go up. As it goes down it overflows back into the cylinders. Cen't see yours well enough, but all the ones I ever saw the bucket was actually a manure fork with an apron that slipped over it for loading dirt and gravel.

I have a Model 31 loader (actually just bought another one) and I can raise my loader to the end of the cylinders with the oil in my belly pump. The problem I have is that the cylinders leak some oil past the inside leathers and before I put in return lines I used to get an oil shower when I raised the loader to the maximum height. Return hoses direct this oil back to the reservoir. Roger

Jon, I am constantly amazed at the number of people who will insist that those cylinders are actually two way, and can be used with a two way hydraulic system to create down pressure on the loader. As you have pointed out, quite the opposite is true.

John, the bucket is as you say. I don't remember that much about the loader as I used one over 50 year ago but haven't seen one until this one for about that long. Thanks for your help.

Is the frame made from channel iron, and relatively straight?

Yes, the lift arms are straight channel iron with the hyd. cylinder on top. I guess I should have put this in another spot so I could post a picture. In any case, the lift arms attach to a frame at the rear axel. There are two pipe slides on the front that rotate as the bucket is lifted

Looks like the others have given you the correct answer. I have a 31 on an H, tough old piece pf machinery. Amazing what you can do with one of these.
