Farmal Super C dead generator?

I am not a regular on this web board, but I do have 3 old Red tractors that I use around the farm. My Super C Farmal has developed a problem with charging. It doesn't show a charge on the voltmeter anymore. It shows a discharge, and after running for awhile the battery goes dead. If I charge the battery it stays up sitting in the barn, but runs down while using the tractor. For the last 10 or 20 years it never did seem to run the voltmeter very high, like my Cub Lowboy does. So, how do I check the generator and associated system? Are rebuild kits available for them somewhere? Brushes or other internal parts?

Hi Don, Try this web site for a troubleshooting
diagram that has been put together by BobM. It
is>Link

Thanks guys. The proceedure for checking the entire charging system was clear and easy to follow. And you both had the same information for the check of the generator. When I jumped the Field contact to the ground, it was obvious that the generator was working. Much above idle and it showed plenty of charge, and at mid engine speed it went off the top of the ammeter. I took the voltage regulator off and polished up the contacts, hoping that it will work. I ordered a new voltage regulator from the local Case/IH dealer, but the $38 is more than I have right now. Is there any way to check, adjust and repair these things? I might need to sell of one of these old Farmals to keep the others running. Anybody need an old Farmal M? Its kind of a strange one with two gas tanks and shudders over the radiator. One of the gas tanks is maybe 25 gallons and the other one is maybe 2 gallons. And it has a magneto on it. I have no idea what it is worth.

Hi Don, Check with your local NAPA automotive
store for a voltage regulator. I've heard they
carry some 6 volt regulators. Good Luck, Hal

Hi Don, Post that Farmall M on here, someone will probably buy it. Glad to help you out with your charging problem. That procedure that BobM
has posted is the best I've seen. I should've had that years ago when cars were using generators. The last car that I had with a generator was a 1959 Rambler Rebel V8. I put over 100K miles on it before I had to replace the generator. I should've put new bearings in it when I replaced the brushes. The one bearing was worn and it let the one end drop and that fixed the generator. I bought a rebuilt one for about $20.00 exchange. Is the voltage regulator on the Super C the same as on the M that you're thinking about selling? Hal
PS: I had a Super C at one time very nice tractor.

Hello Hal. I did have a 1961 Rambler American. But I don't remember if it had a generator or not. It was my first car. My Farmal M does not have a voltage regulator that is automatic. It is a hand operated switch for high or low charge. Most of the time you have to run it on low charge if you are plowing or something with the engine running pretty fast. But I haven't plowed with it in years since they invented all of these RoundUp Ready beans! But I still use the Super C and Cub Lowboy for cutting grass around the farm and general small stuff.

Hi Don, We had 4 of those Ramblers in the family.
Ours was a station wagon, My dad had a 1961 Classic sedan, my sister had a 1960 Rambler American and my former brother-in-law had a 1959 wagon too. He took to it to England in 1960, he was recalled to active duty by the Air Force in 1950.

The worst thing about these cars were the rear axle bearings failing and then spinning
and undercutting the axle. I put several in my wagon and 1 in my dad's. Had to replace the axles. My sister's Rambler had a generator too.

Generators were usually trouble free.
A lot of tractor owners screwed up by using a negative ground instead of the positive ground
that were on the earlier tractors and cars.
Good Luck, Hal

So, are there any places on the internet to buy parts for these old tractors? Like a voltage regulator for a Farmal Super C? Were all of them the same back then for the 6 volt positive ground system? Is there anything I could replace it with on a temporary basis like my old M seems to have only a switch, I assume placed a resistance across to the feed on the field coil for low charge rate. Any electrical engineers out there?

Hi Don, You may find a regulator on ebay. Call
this tollfree number to see if they have one.
1-800-839-1992 or 1-800-732-0012. Both of these numbers are in York county PA. Check to see if they have a used one for sale or a rebuilt unit.
Hal

PS: That Farmall M with the big fuel tank may be a collector's item. I'm in MD. Ever here of Aberdeen Proving Ground?

Don: To see if the problem is generator or regulator try this. With the engine running at a moderate speed connect a jumper wire from ground to "Field" terminal and watch your charge rate. If it charges with the jumper your problem is likely the regulator. If you have no charge the problem is likely the generator. After this quick test replace the regulator if it's faulty or have the generator repaired by a generator shop. You will be better off with a local repair than a Mexican rebuilt. This comes from over 50 years experience. Good Luck, Ken

If this test indicates the generator is good and the voltage regulator is bad, could I put a potentiometer in this temporary field terminal to ground link and adjust it to maintain some charge in the battery while I am waiting for a new one to be delivered?

You can use your potentiometer, but disconnect when you shut off the engine. Your "M" must have the 3 brush generator with a cutout. The whole system would have to be switched to the "C" to make it work. Good Luck, Ken
