I had bought a Ford 881 cause I needed a tractor and then was given a International 404. It is in much better shape than the Ford. I have been doing some research and have a few questions that I hope someone could help me with:

1. Does this tractor have live hydraulics? Does it have an independant / live PTO?

2. Does anyone know how many Horsepower this tractor was rated at?

3. What is the "load control" lever for? I would assume it has something to do with leveling out implements?

4. Anything I should watch out for?? Any gotchas that I should take care of right away?

5. Where do I look for serial numbers?

I really appreciate the help guys!

Thanks

1. The easy way to tell if a tractor has "live" anything is to activate that thing, then push the clutch. If the thing stops when you push the clutch, or grinds like crazy when you try to engage it, it is not live.

2. No, but I'm sure some simple research will ferret that data out in short order.

3. My memory of that era tractor is a bit foggy, but it is either a form of depth (draft) control for the rear hitch, or the main control for the rear hitch itself. Does the tractor have a 3pt or a fast hitch?

4. Dunno. You have the tractor.

5. What do you mean? Serial numbers as in where on the tractor or where to find out what year it is? The serial number is on a shiny metal plate riveted to the outside of the tractor in an obvious location, usually on the bell housing. The plate may have been removed or painted over.

Sorry...

Clearly I was not specific enough. I found the HP ratings on the Internet. 36 PTO HP. Did the IH 404 have a two stage clutch for the PTO? I was told that you can only tell if it is live PTO if you have an implement hooked up to place a load on the PTO as the shaft will often spin without PTO engaged and no implement attacked. I would assume I have a 3 pt hitch as it has a place for the toplink to hook to. Did the fast hitch have this as well? How can I distinguish? I found the serial number I think on a small metal plate. Makes it a 1962. Still looking on advice on anything specific to the IH 404 that I should take care of asap. I have ordered owners manual and shop manual and will do a complete fluid change next weekend.

I do believe I have some type of electrical issue as the tractor will run fine and then sputter and mis and then start to run fine again a few minutes later. Doesn't seem to matter whether engine is hot or cold. I will also clean carb, sediment bowl and fuel tank.

Thanks

The early 404's had a dead pto. I don't know the serial number break where it became live, but I would guess that yours is NOT live. Forget what the people told you and push in the clutch and see if it stops or keeps running. Some of them turn slightly when disengaged, which is probably what they are talking about. It may have a 2-stage clutch, I don't know. My understanding is the 404 was the 1st or one of the 1st IH tractors with 3 point hitch, no fast hitch. I last saw one in 1967, so my memory is a little foggy.
