Degunking brake bands

Hi all,

I pulled apart the brakes on a '40 M that I'm working on, and I found that the brake bands have lots of wear left on them, but they'll all oily and greasy. I think I remember a book on rebuilding saying something about heating them with a torch to bake the grease out them. Is that the best/only way to get them back in shape?

Thanks,

- David

I used to work in a truck stop.when we would get a truck in with a bad seal the lining was always soaked with grease..we would wipe the excess off and spay them with starting fluid.wipe it off and spray it again.after a few applications of this the lining was pretty clean.the fluid cuts the grease and draws it out of the lining.i have also used it to clean carbs and air valves.removes all that fine grit for reassembly.try it,but be carefull...no smoking or electrial sparks near it.

David the best luck I had was placing them in a bucket of gas and let them soak for a week or so. But that only had limited success. Easier to buy new ones which run rougly $100 for the 2 band assemblies for the H.

David about $150 for the two bands for the M. Sorry, I have both Hs and Ms laying around.
