i used my 49 h on friday to move some things around. i parked it and tried to start it monday and the batt was dead so i let it sit until last night. i charged the batt and it started for a second and died. i can't get it started. i blew out the carb and it has gas pouring out the bottom when i choke it. i checked for spark and get it too. i am baffled as to why it would be fine then not be fine after sitting like it usually does. could it be a weak coil as it is the original ih one....it also rained a bunch saturday. any help would be great....

The EXACT thing happened to me...cept for the dead battery.
After it rained 6 inches, went out to start my 300. It ran for a few seconds then died. I then spent most of saturday doing all the right things:dried out the distributor, checked for spark etc etc.
Then I happened to look at the sediment bowl. Guess what? It was full of water. Drained the sediment bowl, drained the carb, let some gas run thru...and VOILA! It fired right off and purred like a kitten.
I always forget to check the simplest things first.

If you find the sediment bowl full of water, always take a look at the seal on and drainage around the gas cap. That water is getting in the gas tank somehow. It doesn"t do the tank a bit of good, and rusted tanks are a pain in the butt.

As a stop-gap the same trick you use on the exhaust stack can work...put a tin can over it, so long as it isn"t somehow getting a puddle around it. That will just seep in regardless.

If the battery died, maybe you left the ingition switch on and drained the battery that way. It would also burn the points; check them for blue coloring indicating they were hot.

If it rained a bunch I"d check to see if there is moisture in distributor, perhaps a cracked cap. Could also be some moisture on contacts.
