Farmall C distributor - timing

My Farmall C was running good. I had overhauled it about 2 years ago..clipping pastures with no problem. Recently it began to run hard (like it was out of time) and then quit. Now, the only way I can get it to run is to loosen the distributor and turn it 15-20 degrees counter-clockwise. It will then crank, run kind"a rough and began to die..

What do you think is wrong.. maybe the distributor needs to be rebuilt.

Please advise.
Thanks.
dan

One thing to check is the rubbing block on the points. As that wears, the timing will retard and if severe enough may cause the symptoms you describe. Put in a new set of points & condenser (I always do both to prevent problems) while you have it apart.

Your distributor may also be worn, while you have the cap off, grab the shaft and see how much play is there. Since the timing on a C is all gear driven, the only other thing I can think of (others may have more) that could cause your symptoms would be if a gear is wearing and jumping over.

Good luck!

Dan – Problem could be as simple as the breaker point gap set too close. If you haven’t already, pop open the distributor and reset the points to 0.020”. Or better yet install a new set of points.

If that doesn’t help the problem could be the distributor needs a rebuild as you suggest (worn bearings, stuck or broken centrifugal advance, etc).

Another, long shot possibility: A sheared camshaft drive gear key or broken cam gear hub. I’m not familiar with the timing gear setup on the C engine so it may not even be possible. However I have seen this several times on H’s and M’s equipped with live hydraulics. Depending on how much the cam gear slips the engine will still run, but will run very poorly and have no power. Only solution is to open the front of the engine and replace the failed component(s).
