I'm looking at two tractors to run a brush hog on my small acreage: a 454 and a 464, both diesels and appear to be '70s vintage. Considering they are in comparable shape is one better than the other? They both have the 8/4 transmissions, ps, etc. Any advice on what in partucular to look for would be greatly appreciated. Pardon me if you read this on the other IH sites, too, but I need all the help I can get. Thanks, Gene

Think the 464 replaced the 454 in production around 71 so the 464 will be the newer tractor. 464 also has about 5 more HP. Many of the 464's also had cat. 2 hitches. I have used a 464 some and found it to be a very agile tractor with the ps. While I am not familiar with the 454 I would assume that they are near the same. I own a 424 which is an excellent tractor for a 6' bushhog. On their best days these tractors are known for not having real good brakes but with a little attention they can be made to work quiet well. They have very strong hydraulic systems and tend to be front end light so take a little time getting used to it.

Hi, both basically the same tractor but 464 has 4 cylinder D206 vs 3 cylinder D179 engine therefore the 464 has slightly more HP. The D206 is also in 584 and has same pistons, sleeves and rods as the 6 cylinder D310. The D179 has same cylinders etc as 4 cylinder D239 in 574 and 684.
In my part of the country the 464s were rare as most farmers chose the 574 with the D239 which could be cranked up close to 65 HP with adjusting the injector pump.

From archives:

Hi, my dad, then my brother have owned the same 454D for over 30 years. The hour meter quit several years ago at about 5000 hrs. but probably in excess of 10,000 hrs on it. Great utility tractor. German Diesel runs for ever with minimal maintance. Had diesel go into the crankcase oil twice caused by an $8 oil seal on the Bosch injector pump.
As someone else mentioned the parking brake if accidently left on and the tractor driven the transmission/hydraulic system will be clogged with brake lining. Also the hydraulic brakes can be a problem when they are old and the seals start to leak and air gets in the brake lines.
Also check to see if power steering unit is leaking oil from under the dash down by the clutch and brake pedals. My brother's has leaked a little for 10 years now but not enough to fix yet.
Another caution is be careful connecting to other hydraulic cylinders make sure that they have the proper IH Hytran hydraulic oil in them.

Therefore choose the one that you feel most comfortable with.

My 2 cents
