Does any one know how to pull the sector off the top of the bolster on a Farmal H? The book I have says use a sutable puller,but I can't imagine what the puller would look like.

I have found that using a sledge hammer and striking the steering shaft between the upper and lower bushings will do the trick most times. if you still have trouble have someone pry on the bottom flange while you are stiking the shaft. I would not hit the threads except as a last resort. Working at a slavage yard, I"ve found this method works 9 out of 10 times, on hundreds of tractors. Usually the the 1 out of 10 difficult sectors are the ones left out in the fence rows with no oil in the sector case or tractors which have been in a fire(those are the worst).

Did mine a little different because I removed the entire front end by unbolting it from the frame rails, then disassembled it (separated the upper bolster from the lower bolster). Seemed easier to roll the whole front end away, wheels and all, and slowly set it down to disassemble than to try to remove (and lower) the front bolster later. Anyway, I did manage to get the gear out by setting the upper bolster up on blocks with the upper bolster pivot shaft freely suspended (a few inches). Then I loosened the castle nut to the top of the threads and a few taps on the brass drift with the 5 pound sledge and the shaft fell right out the bottom.

I agree 100% with DWV,I just changed my sector gear Wednesday,and did it just like he says. Only thing I did different was I used a big brass drift instead of a piece of flat metal. I stood on a step ladder,makes swinging the sledge easier.I couldn't believe how much the teeth had worn,only 3 or 4 right in the middle of the sector but boy was they worn.It really tightened up the steering alot,it was definately worth the trouble. I was about ready to give up,but once I got a steady stance on the ladder where I could swing the sledge,things started happening then.

Raise tractor until front wheels are a inch or 2
off ground,back nut that holds gear on until top is even with top of shaft,I lay a flat piece of metal on nut,then hit it square with a big sledge hammer.The less you have to hit it the better.
Most times 1 or 2 times will do it.If you have wide front this wont work.

I wish I could help, but I could never get mine off. Let me know if you find a way. I tried solvents and a "home made puller" using C-clamps, but it never budged. I think I could eventually do it if I use "Silkroil" for a long while and a torch to heat up the sector gear. I figure I am eventually going to be smarter than rust.
