Having a problem with the injector pump on my 650D and hopefully the wisdom on this board can help me figure out the problem. Basically, I'm getting no pressure, zero, out of the primary pump that bolts to the rear of the main injector pump. I have good fuel flow going into the primary pump, and the screen in the inlet fitting is clean. But when I run the tractor(on gas) with the output line removed from the primary pump, all the fuel I get out of it is just what gravity from the tank flows. No pressure at all. It's almost like the gears in the primary pump aren't even turning. I've taken the primary pump off, and made sure the pressure valve isn't stuck open, and that the square drive coupling is still attached to the gear shaft like it's supposed to be. Is it possible that the square portion on the rear of the governor shaft that drives the primary pump has rounded or broken off? Or is there something else I'm overlooking here? If I let the tractor sit for a few days, fuel will work it's way up to the injectors(probably by gravity since the tank's pretty full) and they'll bleed ok and it will switch and run on deisel for awhile, then it just dies from lack of fuel. Any help or advice would be appreciated!!!

Has this tractor been sitting a while? It sounds like the rack that opens the plunger is stuck.

Yup- it"s been sitting for quite awhile- not sure how long before I got it. That"s good advice- so....how do I unstick the rack that runs the plunger???? I"ll look in my manual again and see if I can get it figured out, but any further advice would be most appreciated!

I take the pump off the tractor, take the top off the pump so you can see down in the pump. when you move the throttle control on the side it should be moving the rack. If it is stuck it won,t move. So you can spray PB blaster or WD40 on the rack until it gets unstuck. You should clean the inside of the pump while you have it apart. The only seals you should need when putting back together are O-rings at the top where the big nut is. Just memorize hoe you took it apart. They really aren't that complicated.

Thanks- I"ll check that out. I really don"t know if that"s the problem though, since I have had it running on deisel since I"ve bought it. Would a stuck rack keep the primary pump from pumping but still allow the tractor to run? The reason I ask is because if I fill the secondary filter clear full of fuel through the bleed hole on top, then it gives a good spray of fuel when I bleed each injector and runs good for just a little while. Then it quits and it won"t bleed out the secondary filter. I took the output line off the primary pump and there"s just no fuel being pumped out, like I said in the first post, it just seems like the primary pump isn"t turning.

Thanks for more input guys. Brian, I was just using the stock gasket. Even stuck the primary back on there with no gasket just to test and had the same result. Randy, I'm leaving for the weekend but I'll probably email you next week to get your brother's shop info in case I can't get this going myself.

Be sure you aren't using too thick a gasket between the primary pump and the main body. I make a lot of my own gaskets, and couldn't get mine to work either. Finally made one out of .006 paper stock to get the coupling to mesh so it would pump.

Ron,

My brother has a shop where he primarily works on Cummins pumps and injectors. I know that about 5 years ago he help a guy get the pump working on an MD. To my knowledge that is the only one of them that he has ever worked on. If you would like to contact him then e-mail me.

your 650 should have a type B pump.(no scavenger pump). it has a big IH cast on the side.
a gear pump is positive displacement, so if it is turning, it should be pumping, unless the internal clearance is too great.
remove the rear cover, and see if the gears have worn into the cover.
the pump shaft gear is driven by a woodruff key.
check for a sheared key.
the pump pressure should be 58-66 lbs. at full
engine speed.
maybe this will help!

Thanks for the reply. The manual I have doesn"t show any difference between the pumps as far as one not having a scavenge pump, so your response was helpful! The rear cover on the primary pump looks good where the gears go- no scoring that I can see. The gears don"t look too bad either. I took the primary pump off and it appears all the keys and pins are in place. There"s not much end clearance on the shaft or gears with the rear cover in place, so that should be ok too. I didn"t look inside the main pump to see what things looked like in there when I had the primary off....guess that"s my next step. Needs new gaskets and a shaft seal on the primary anyway. Thanks again!
