On a 12V 450 ignition wiring, did they come from the factory with a ballast resistor? I am helping a friend with his and it has one. I thought if you have a 12V coil, you didn't need the resistor. Just wondering what was origional as we don't have the parts book for this one.

Thanks in advance.

Just went through this on our 450... if you get a (12v) coil with an internal resistor, you can do away with the original ceramic resistor. Positive ground, negative wire from the switch, positive wire to the distributor. OEM tractor parts company is making (or reselling) the original styled coil, and has the internal resistor.

I know the 560 had a ballast resistor in line to the 6-volt coil, so I’m guessing the 450 was similar. If you have a 12 volt coil you don’t need the resistor however…

On the 560 there is a wire from the starter solenoid to the coil side of the resistor. This wire carries 12 volts to the 6-volt coil (bypasses the resistor) while the solenoid is engaged. As soon as the solenoid disengages, it returns to 6-volts to the coil. This was commonly called a 12 volt start-6 volt run system. Putting 12 volts to a 6-volt coil increases the spark for starting and the short duration does not adversely affect the ignition parts. The thought is that it will make starting easier.

Hope this helps!
