My dad and I purchased a 1977 1086 last year, it seems that when we attach our hay mower or our bush hog that everything wants to drift or sway to much. In the manual that we have for it, it says that if you are using Cat. 2 equipment instead of Cat 3 that you need to turn the eyebolts on the lift arms rear facing from front facing. We have done this and still have to much drift. I have noticed that on the sway limiters that connect on the lift arms that there is some adjustment in these, do I need to screw these in since we will probably never use any Cat. 3 equipment? This tractor also has the old type of limiters not the newer cam type limiters.

Thanks,

IH three points are famous for sloppiness. They have so many parts in the sway limiters that if each part wears a little it adds up to a lot of movement. There is a aftermarket kit were you add sway blocks like on JD tractors. The name of the company that makes the kit escapes me at the moment. Guys around here use them on cultivator tractors to keep things from moving around.

Kevin: I think you may have a bit of wear coming into play as well. I remember having to do rebuilding on my 656 and 1066 by the time they were 10 years old. I might add they also had close to 8,500 hours on them by that time as well. I felt the semi-mount plow was quite hard on these linkages. The side draft on those large implements is quite vicious, especially when you are allowing it some side float and it hits the limit.

Not sure you will ever completely master using the catergory III hitch as II. IH may have felt their operators manual had all the answers, I for one didn't. I found the 656 hitch far superior in catergory II applications.

My Dad and I noticed the other day that were the lift arms attach to the frame that it looked a little loose on the right side. The tractor only has about 3300 hours on it and was never used for plowing that much from what I can find out about it. The guy that owned it got back many years ago after it was repoed from the orginal owner, and he mostly used it to cut hay.

Thanks,

Kevin: All these hitches and the stabilizers were great when new, problem is they don't stay new very long. I know some people who took the entire 3 point hitch linkage off during times when not using it. Placing the hitch in a raised position, and tieing lower links together with bungie cord helps, but on those big tractors, in two weeks the bungie is gone. I guess that is why the only 3 point equipment I ever owned was plow and sprayer. Even with my sprayer, all that was muonted on hitch was tank. My boom was mounted on front of tractor.
