Despite the coolest and wettest July in recent memory we are gradually getting the wheat in here south of Lake Ontario. Punch below for a few pix of combining, trucking, baling, etc. in progress.

Note that many shots were taken thru cab windows hence the somewhat "dirty" appearance of some of the photos. Also note that while this post not technically Farmall related, there do appear IHC grain trucks and a 1066 Hydro among these photos - so I guess it's OK to post 'em here! ...Bob M

Bob: Photos are great, not much windshield dirt, must have been on your glasses.

From what I'm hearing around here yields on that wheat is quite good and like you we've had one of the coolest summers in some time. Just wonder how that will play out on corn and beans. There are some nice stands of corn and beans around here, but a lot of uneven stands as well.

I see the first casualty of the wheat harvest about 3 miles from me. Appears to be a 7720, went up in flames. It's some distance from the road so hard to tell exactly which model but it is Deere green. Only paint left is header and the very rear of machine. They seem to have a lot of round baler fires around here as well, claim it's straw wraping between rollers and bearings. I wonder if some of it may be careless smoking by operators. I could see wheat straw igniting quite easily on hot breezy days.

Thanks Hugh! Wheat yields this year have been very good. Problem is the persistent wet is now causing the crop to sprout. And the wet ground makes it hard to get around in the fields – we’re constantly struggling with stuck grain trucks, combines, Stackcruisers, etc. Also hard to get straw dry enough for baling.

Interesting your comment about baler fires. I observed damp stalks and weeds had a propensity to wrap around the center of the combine header auger causing it to become extremely hot. I can see where under extreme conditions it might start a fire. (On the other hand it’s so #&@%$ wet this year you couldn’t start a wheat straw fire if you wanted too!) ...Bob M

BobM, Thanks for the photos, they were great! Those grain trucks must weigh a few pounds when loaded up!
