Have a fellow that wants to trade me a I-484 IH diesel tractor. Has approx. 5400 hrs. on it. Seems to be well maintained. Looks a little rough, but starts and runs very well. Has excellent turf tires on back, fronts worn,IH roll over bar, PS,Live PTO, etc. Runs through the gears fine. Has had the fuel tank cleaned out, new starter, battery and cables. Wants real money in trade of $3500-$4000?? What do you all think? I really don't need another utility tractor, but.....So would probally sell it.

Sounds too cheap. Around here any 84 in decent shape is $4500 and up, usually $5000 and up. Western Pa.

Hey Wolfy. I agree. Turns out to be a great little tractor, so I traded for it. Probally regret it, but I posted an ad on the YT photo ad section under: "IH 484 Diesel 40HP". So we will see..... .

Red: You may end up keeping that tractor if you buy it. I really don't know anything about the 484 except most people who bought them new are still running them, and working in commercial applications. They just seem to run and run with very few problems. I am talking about 8 to 10 tractors I am personally aware of.

One I know of in particular was bought new when the guy started farming. (mid to late 70's) Since about his 5th year farming he has always maintained a 3 tractor fleet. His needs are for two 40 to 50 hp tractors and one 70 hp. He has never bought anything but new tractors. That IH 484 has stayed around that farm while 2 Allis, 2 Fords, 2 Kubotas and 2 Deeres, have come and gone. Today the 484 is still there along with a new Deere and Kubota.

I have also been on discussions here at YT for about 5 years now. I estimate 80% of what I've seen on here has been positive, about the 484. Not a lot of tractors fall in that catergory.

Thanks for your comments. I am still trying to find out if this is the right money for this tractor. I don't want to get to deep into it.

Hi, check the archives on this site for 454,495 these are the older and newer versions.

Check the parking brake to see if it will hold.
If it won't hold chances are someone drove tractor with parking brake on and now there is bits of parking brake band floating around in the hydraulic oil. These bits will eventually clog something in the hydraulic system. This the weak piont of these tractors. When the parking brake is engaged there is an indicator light on the dash but a lot of times the lamp burns out and
people forget the parking brake. The newer 495 has a flashing warning light.

Other than this one problem these utility tractors are excellent. The 179D engine will last a long time with minimal maintance. My brother has a 454D that is over 30 years old and has about 15K hrs on it and is still running well.

My 2 cents
Jb

Thanks for your comments. I will check out the parking brake. The hydraulics seem to work fine, but will check never the less. Like I said before, I am still trying to find out if this is the right money for this tractor.
