Looking for Cub charging advice

I have been having a problem with my 1950 Cub killing the battery. The Cub has a 6v positive ground system.It was suggested that I use a voltmeter to better pinpoint the problem. Here are the results;

The volt meter read 6 without the battery connected (just charged it) starts right up. With the throttle at up about half the amperes Gauge (on the cub) registers about 6 amp on the Positive side (right of center). This is with the switch on "L". When I put the voltmeter on the battery there is a negative reading of -.24 when I switch to "H" "D" or "B" voltmeter reads 0.00 and there is a noticable change in the idle (less strain). The Gauge(on the cub) reads zero or even a slight discharge.

I pulled the cable off the battery and the tractor ran fine (it has a magneto). Checked the battery with the voltmeter, dead 0.00 reading.

The positive lead from the battery is grounded directly to the side of the battery box (I didn't put the top on but that wouldn't make any difference would it?). The negative lead goes directly to the cranking motor. What do you think my next steps should be? new voltage regulator? Generator? or a freakin' hand crank?

Thanks ahead of time for your help...

Ken, in addition to the other advice you've gotten here, try using a battery jumper cable to bypass the ground to the starter mounting bolt. You said your ground cable was still connected to the side of the battery box. The boxes are real bad to rust and corrode arond the bolts holding them to the floor and loose connection.

Do read the posts by BobM. The charging system on the early Cub and the early M are essentially identical. I suspect on your Cub that the problem is more than one thing. It could be charging OK and have some other problem discharging the battery. Diagnose and repair one thing at a time.

Hi Ken, Go to Page2 on this Forum and look for Eric whom is having trouble with a Farmall M. He
is also having a charging problem. Click on BobM's message. He has a troubleshooting step by step flow chart for troubleshooting generators.

You can click on and make a copy. It is very detail. Hal
