I went and looked at a New Holland 479 haybine 9ft model. The machine was in excellent shape with new knives and guards. Overall appearance was excellent. The machine was located in upstate NY. Asking price is $4900, any thoughts on that price. I thought it was a little high, but I have zero to no experience on that type of implement. Just trying to get a feeling. My friend is presently using a 7ft New Holland haybine that is pretty well beat. Any thoughts appreciated.

Too high. That is a really old haybine. Just my opinion.

even with new knives and guards, i'd say $3000-3500 should buy a real nice 479. they must be 25-30 yrs old by now. they were a good working haybine.

Scotty I agree with Hugh to a point when I was still haying New Holland guards were $9 after market were about $4, but if you bought after market take 20 home if you bought New Holland take 5 home. I found about the same with sections.

scotty: It may be good or it may be bad. I was just down to a neighbors this morning. He just finished putting new knife sections in a cutter. I have forgotten the price on those. That double finger guards were $18. CAD each. The kinves were just as far out of line. He was thinking of taking them back as a competitor has them for $7.00 I can remember buying those for under $2.00 Soon have to raise cows without them eating.
