I have been thinking latly that it is just not safe to leave tractor unattended at a show because some kid could climb on it and start in gear. even if you disconect the ignition or ground the mag the kid can still make it lurch enough to run over his brother. I realy don't worry too much about my hand start tractors but what about an H or M? I suppose a battery disconect is the best way but how do you make that foolproof and still covenient for the operator? Another thought would be to abandon originality and wire in an auto type solenoid with key switch.

Regarding the hand crankers, I see many people pin the hand crank into their tractors. Many are bent somewhat from bumping in to hard stuff, but I've also seen small kids at shows try turning them, as they seem to attract people. Under the right circumstances, that that situation could be bloody. Put your cranks away !

Back when we were using H to make crop left one setting in field. Several kids went out and started playing around tractor one got on and started tractor in 4 th gear at full throttle. Tractor went allmost 100 feet into woods until small tree pulled clutch back and it just sat there running full bore. Luckily no one was injured and tractor was only slightly scratched. NDS.

While at shows I always leave my tractors in neutral and chock the wheels. Then in the unlikely even if someone accidentally engages the starter the tractor cannot jump.

However I suppose you could rig up a mechanical device to inhibit actuation of the starter switch. For a pull-rod or step-on pedal starter a simple clip to prevent the rod from moving unless the clip was removed would do. Or for a pushbutton switch a close-fitting cover (like a rubber crutch tip or something) slipped over the button to prevent it from accidentally being pushed would work.

Probably the best and easiest way is to just disconnect the battery ground cable from the frame of the tractor.

At our local tractopr show, all ground cables MUST be disconected (for insurance reasons) since the tractors are inside the towns ice rink. 2 years ago a tractor caught on fire on the morning of the second day of it sitting inside the rink, now the cables are all checked VERY carefully to be sure the owners comply!
