I was wondering what everybody does when they replace the rear PTO seal on an H from the origional (longer one)? I got the new style seal, my PTO shaft had a slight groove in it, so I set the seal in about 1/4" from the end of the cover. It doesn't leak and seems to be fine, should I have used 2 seals instead? I was afraid the outer seal (even if greased pretty well) would wear the groove deeper. Thanks!!

I think someone said this before, but putting two seals can be worse than one seal. The outer seal does not get any lubricant; because the inside seal stops all the oil. This can lead to more wear by the outer seal. Also, todays seals are far superior to the old two lip leather seals. Do you ever see double seals on any new machinery? Roger

The parts man at our local CIH said to use 2 seals to replace that one long one. I thought it was a heck of an idea. I, too, put each of them on the high parts of the shaft and no more leaks.

Now that you only have 1 in place, I would wait until it starts to leak before replacing it with 2. Just my opinion.
