Has anyone put a Chevy small block in a farmall 706? My 263 is about ready to die and I have a good 350 sitting in the shop. I only use the 706 for light feeding chores. A 350 could'nt use much more gas than a 263 does. Maybe a german 310 would be better anyone have one to sell?

Don,

I put a 350 on an irrigation well one time; totally worked the snot out of it.

I just don't think you'd like one in a tractor other than a conversation piece.

Rebuild the 263..... ...It has the torque where you need it unlike the V8.

I am looking for a engineless 706/806 to put a "Inliner" Cheby 250 in..... ...With Clifford intake, 4 barrel, headers, etc..... And then drop a Hinson cab on it for the winter to grind feed with. I just think it would make a nice conversation piece and I have a ton of 250's laying around(I like the Inliners for my old trucks).....

I know a guy from my home town who has a pieced together tractor that is part M, 706, and part Case. He has it painted red with IH decals and has a 327 Chevy with a 4-barrel carb. He says he can open her up on the highway and he once passed a car while doing 65! He said the front end came off the ground so he cut the gas, but he still laughed his @$$ of at seeing the look on the car driver's face!

To run 65mph he would have to be turning at least 7000 or so rpm and the rear tires would have to be in good shape round balanced and so forth. Maybe it was 45 mph.

it's less headache to rebuild the 263 parts are easily obtainable from IH and all the various aftermarket suppliers online and locally. i rebuilt a 263 myself (first engine ever)last fall..pretty straightforward--simple i thought.
the torque curve of the sbc 350 is way higher than that of the ih 263 inline 6. the tractor runs at what 2400rpm wide open? the sbc is roughly in the 3000 rpm range when it performs best.
if you want to put a chebby in there, then go with a 292 I6, it would have a closer torque curve to that of the 263 ih. or a ford 300cid...
both the chev and fords are also used industrially on combines, shredders, what have you. but then that creates the extra chore of fabrication to make it all fit together.
my vote is stick with the 263.
