I know of these 2 IH tractors. The 450 only has a straight drawbar, and power steering. 400 has fast-hitch, and is diesel. Both used decent shape. I would say about same used tractors, running. Which would be better to pursue? Is the diesel a hard one for finding engine parts, or engine work more costly? Would the fast-hitch go on the 450 from the 400 OK ? What is there to putting on a good used fast-hitch to the 450, would you have to take the regular drawbar off ? I wonder which one would be a better choice, any opinions ? If both were very similar mechanically ? Please let me know..... thanks a lot !!!!!

1. The 450G has a little more hp.
2. The 400D fast hitch will not go on the 450G without changing rear frame lid. You may need to add another hydraulic valve to 450 if it only has two. The 450 fast hitch will fit both tractors.
3. Power steering is nice. It can be retrofitted to 400.
4. Fast hitch is nice but you can put a three point on either.
5. The 400 fast hitch is better than the 450 fast hitch.
6. Diesel parts can be had but are expensive.
7. Installing a fast hitch shouldn't take more than 2 hours. Yes, old style drawbar has to come off. Fast hitch has it own. You can even get a swinging draw bar for it.
8. My preference would be the 400D because I don't have a diesel in that size. If you are going to work your tractor, go diesel. Cheaper to run.
9. Buy both and build one to suit yourself. Sell the other one. I had to add PS, FH, Tach, and 15.5 x 38 rubber to my F400G.

Wardner, why is the 400 fast hitch better than 450? I always thought the 300 & 400 fast hitches were only used on those particular models but the 350 & 450 were used on serveral subsequent models 460, 560 etc. Interested in your reasoning. P.S. I'm still waiting to get my first fast hitch. Dick Davis

Well Dick, I have both and the 400 FH works better with the plows. More control with the hydraulically controlled "depth control".

It will lift mounted plows and other tools higher out of the ground.

It is quieter.

The "D" handle on the left side of the 450 hitch is hard to operate. It sets the amount or degree of "draft control".

There is a cam or bellcrank in the draft control that is supposedly weak. My hitch seems to be OK.

You can mount a grader blade on the front of the hitch and control the depth over a seven inch range. I don't think that IH ever developed such a tool. My blade is home made.

There maybe other reasons that I am not aware of. I know several farmers who prefer the early hitch but I can't recall why they favor it. I should point out that I am not a farmer and my experience is very limited compared to a professional.

Nearly everyone around here would take a Hundred series two point over the later version. Most because the older style has way better sway control in our hills. We had both a 560 and also the 400 we still have. Pulled the same plow with each of them(4-14's) and the 400 did a nicer job on the sidehills.

10. BTW, that 450 LP head is worth at least $1000. The manifold is worth $200-$300 (?)
11. The LP motor is probably in excellent condition. Most of them usually are.
12 You need to check both TA's. Hook both tractors to a stone boat and pull in the bottom eight gear ranges.
13. I have a W400 with factory LP and never use it because I don't have fuel storage.
14. Compare power take offs. Make sure you get IPTO.
15. Where are you located? Maybe you need someone to help you select the tractor that best fits yoour needs.
