I recently purchased a 47' m that was running good the day i picked it up. I brought it home put a new battery in it, the first day it ran fine. Now it cranks and cranks but won't start. the wiring system is partially disconnected to the gages, and the wire is loose in the back of the kill switch? sometimes the starter button sticks and sometimes (after cranking awhile) it won't engage at all. my wife is dogging me for the purchase, please help!

I just realized that i might have made a serious mistake. The man I bought the tractor from started it with a 12 volt battery. Looking at the wiring diagrams, it appears that i have a 6 volt system w/cutout relay coil/distributor ignition. I am hoping that i only blew the fuse and not the coil.

No one has mentioned it yet. Are you getting gas? I get sediment in the valve out of the tank and I get no gas to the carb. I take the valve stem out and blow backwards using a plastic hose. Then it starts right back up.

i believe it is getting gas. when i disengage the starter gas runs out of the bottom of the carberator, (there is a hollow screw tube on it. it still acts like it isn't getting fire. i am trying to figure out a way to disconnect the kill switch because i think it is grounded out.

What kind of electrical system are you running? 12 volt neg ground with a alternator or 6v positive with a generator?

Check here for wiring diagrams:

At the least, you should go through the wiring. It sounds like a broken wire to the coil, but from the sounds of it you have a lot of little wiring issues that will cause you problems down the road.

i will definitely give this a try. I have been in the Navy for 22 years and am trying to get back to my roots. the original intention was to restore it a little at a time while using it, however it almost seems like i jumped in over my head. i have the push/pull kill switch, the guts pulled out of the back of it when i pushed them back in it arced and sparked. any ideas where you can get a replacement?

Also, be sure to unhook the battery ground cable before you start any electrical work, and lash it off to prevent its getting in contact with anything metallic. If not, there's a chance that you'll have an even bigger mess to explain. Good luck.

Your local C-NH dealer should be able to get one, if they don't have it in stock. If they don't think they can, call Scott Supply (605) 996-7704, they probably have one in stock, as there are a lot of those old girls in our part of the world that still work for a living. (They will ship it to you.) That same switch was used on all the letter series & I just got a new one from them for #1 Son's Super A a while back. The one for a mag is different.
