I have a 1963 international 404 utility, it has an oil bath air cleaner, no three point, "dead PTO" live hydraulics, high and low range gear box, 11.2x 24 rear tires, it was an old NY stated highway dept. tractor, with a hydraulicly controlled sycle mower on it

Just for information, the 404 was available in three versions: Farmall 404 (row crop), International 404 (utility) and International 404 Lo Boy (low profile utility. Three point hitch with draft control and rockshaft was standard on all three versions. PTO was gear driven non independent. Three point could be deducted on any for $172.00. Hydraulic draft control and rockshaft could be deducted for $150.00. PTO could be deducted for $58.50. Power steering could be added for $160.00. A dual range transmission was available for $195.00. LPG was $310.

Marv, According to my 1962 IH Farm Equipment Catalog; the Farmall (row crop) and International (utility) 404 tractors were 2 plow units new in 1962. (replacing the 240 units I think) They were 31hp drawbar, 35hp pto, available in gas and LP versions. They had a 3pth with draft control, "...big capacity live hydraulic system...", 8 speeds forward (??? reverse) power steering and "many comfort and convience features...!" Live pto is not listed as one of them. This tractor is an updated C, SC, 200, 240. It has the cute, old fashioned hexigonal rear axels. In the same catalog, the International B-414 ('62 new too) is listed as gas and diesel versions. It has the same hp and "draft control" but also lists; box section axel, differential lock and live pto. So there you go. As the off-spring of the letter series tractors, I'm sure you'll find the 404 a great machine. Jared

pretty straight foward tractor. 4 fowards and one reverse. live hydraulics but a dead PTO. c-135 engine. 35-37 hp. not a real large tractor but pretty easy to work on. . and wet sleeve engine.overall, a pretty good tractor.
some of these tractors were, from what i heard, were equiped with a creeper tranny. have fun

Perhaps not as popular as some of the other Farmall/International tractors, but a good tractor, there were over 8000 International 404's built. I have never driven one, but my understanding is that the early ones did not have live pto, if that makes any difference to you.

CNKS This is the 2nd time I've noticed you refer to early 404 not having live pto. I really don't know anything about these. One of them caught my eye the other day on a photo add. Do you have any info like serial numbers on live PTO tractors. What caught my eye on these, they look like at beefed up 240 with a C-135 rather than C-123 engine. The one I saw on the photo add had an after market 3 point. I remember when these were new, IH touted them as all having draft controled factory 3 point. Can you enlighten me. I may have to buy this tractor as I need something different. If I could find one with live PTO so much better.

I probably should not respond to posts about tractors I have only read about -- sometimes the info is incorrect. But, according to a book I have: The 404 was built from 1961-1967, was equipped with a live pto in "about" 1964 -how's that for accuracy? 1964 farmall SN's are 2259-2567, International 6452-8491. Had 4 speed transmission with two ranges, hydrostatic power steering and a dry air filter. The 3-point hitch had draft control. It may have been an option, since the one you mention has an aftermarket 3-point. The 404 and 504, I believe were the 1st IH tractors hydrostatic power steering, dry air filters, and draft control 3-points. The 504 had had an oil cooler for the hydraulic fluid mounted in front of the radiator, another first.

CNKS: I really don't know about your accuracy, I' m not trying to check you here, this is one IH tractor I've never even seen. By the 1960s here in Canada the British diesels were priced so that it virtually ended the sale of those tractors under 40hp from the US without live pto or diesel. Some of the Farmall 140, 240 and 404 did come this way speciffically for row crop cultivation work. I have never seen a 404 Farmall or Utility. I saw my first 240 Utility at an auction last week.

So I'm not pulling your leg Charles, I truly want to know a bit about these. If I could find one with a factory 3 point and live PTO and Utility then I will keep looking. Back when these tractors were new the smallest I was even interested in was the 504. I did look at one of those in a diesel once. I even bought a 504 Gas with a farm. Do remember seeing the 404 in the buyers guide but never paid it any attention back then. Was the factory 3 point, lower link sencing on draft control as the 504, 06 and 56 tractors were?

Ken Updike's "International Harvester Tractors 1955-1985 says (p 36): "A torsion bar connected internally to the tractors TOP (emphasis mine) link arm would sense the draft load". Ken was talking about the 404 and 504.

My 404 has an oil bath air filtration. It does also have draft control, could have been an option back then?

As I said, I shouldn't comment on tractors I haven't seen. Both of my references says the 404 has a dry air filter, one of those was written by Ken Updike, but if yours has an oil bath, then you are right. It must not have been standard equipment, or perhaps it was one of IH's "delete options". Obviously I have already stated more than I know!

I have a utility 404 that I am working on and my understanding is that they all came with a factory 3- point. Cant tell you about live PTO because I have not used the tractor. I just now got the engine running and have to now get the hydralics working on it. Mine is a 1961 model.

I had a 1961 IH 404 Lo-Boy, it had an oil bath air cleaner like the Super C, but it did not have the factory three point lift installed. I had to build one and used a hyd cylinder to lift the arms. Had hyd remotes at rear, left and right sides. Did not have live PTO. Only had 4 forward speeds and reverse. Hyd pump GPM was a little weak to operate the FEL, but it did work. Power steering worked good.

Thanks everyone for responding to my request for information. All information was very timely. I did buy the tractor for $500. However, hydraulic oil is leaking into the engine. The tin is rough but otherwise in good condition. (I hope) The serial nomber is 3560J and it does have live PTO, 3 pt. draft and dual hydraulics.
