Is a 856xl british? What for motor does it have, and how many hp? Are these good tractors for plowing?

The International 856 XL is were made in Germany,
from 1984 until the Maxums came out in 1989.
It has DT-239 diesel at 79 pto horsepower.
All the Internationals were good tractors, but in
my opinion the Germans were superior.
Best wishes, Jens Andersen Denmark

Amen to that,
I was told (from an IH mechanic!) that the German built tractors were far more reliable than the 'Doncaster Dustbins' that were been produced just at that time. I know of one or two around me (IH enthusiasts at that ) were really put off IH due to unreliable tractors coming from that factory.

Just to confuse matters, I think the tractor you are thinking of was actually made in France, 85hp powered by a turbocharged D239 engine.

Thanks guys,
But this tractor is not a "normal" 856. It looks to have a 86 series cab, but the tractor is smaller than the 856 I'm used to. I'll get a picture, and post try to post it if I can figure out how.

Matt

MP: I don't think it is British, the 26 series were the British equivilant. I believe I remembers some discussion awhile back on deluxe versions of 856. Don't think it was anything mechanical, just seating, platform, may be decals, etc. I am not exactly sure on this, I'm only posting this as it may jog someone's memory.

If its a Hydro, those shouldn't be used for plowing or any kind of hard pulling activity because they just won't take it and rebuilding a hydro is expensive. If it's a gear drive then I wouldn't hesitate to use it for whatever.

Hydros & hard pulling are a natural - look at all those dozers where the only gear is to turn the corner at the differential. Didn't make an 856 Hydro in US. 1026 could be Hydro at the time. The XL sounds British.

Most tractors are good for plowing, depending on the size of the plow. The 856 is US made, has a 407 CID diesel or 301 CID gas/LPG engine. About 100 hp. Built from 1967-1971. There is probably a similar British built tractor, but I don't know what it is called.
