First time tractor owner. When I try to shift into any gear there is major grinding noise and of course will not go into gear. Is there any adjustments that can be made/checked? Thanks!

Bob,

You may just require an adjustment like the guys are saying. My '67 Loboy did the same thing, previous owner had adjusted the clutch fingers. He did it wrong and the fingers were coming in contact with the release/throwout bearing every time the clutch was depressed.

Bob, Before you do any of that..... I have five cubs, one of them has had a leaky rear main for a while, and it gets on the clutch. When the oil dries it sticks the plate to the flywheel and does exactly what you're talking about. Every month or so, I just spray some WD40 through the hole on the bottom of the bell housing which frees it up. The other thing to try is starting it in gear with your foot on the clutch, which will break it free (if thats the problem). Of course, be ready to turn the key off in case it isn't... Matt.

hi bob Hold the phone!! wait a minute!!
just some more info on your cub.. i will agree with Old about the clutch adjustment, yes do get a service manual and!!!!!the ih parts manual, check out the exploded view of the clutch housing,,BUT!!
there are two types of clutch operating rods on these machines, IH book #tc-37f group 07 pge 4.
cubs with sn501 to 32228 has the adj. inside the clutch housing like Old said. cubs with sn32229and up (like mine )have the adjustment on the clutch pedal!! much easier to adjust.. yours is a 54 so it should be like mine (thought something didn`t sound right)
check this out first before you split the tractor!!!!! look for 1 3/16" clutch pedal freeplay,
(original cub manual pg.40 red cover, 1949),and make sure you get the o&m and parts manuals the info you will get from these books will pay you back 10 to 20 fold the amount you`ll pay for them 30 to 100$ I prefer the IH books ,you can look online for case ih dealers they`ll know what your looking for.. good luck

First off you need to get a manaul for it, and yes there is an adjustment. Under the tractor just behind the engine is a little circle plate remove it and up inside is the adjustment for the clutch its not easy to do and if some one did what they did to a friends cub you will need to split it to do it. They put the clutch rod in back wards so it can't be done with out spliting his cub
