i just put my H engine back together last week and i was driving it around today and i noticed that there was anti-freeze on top of one of the head bolts. it was one of the bolts that holds down the throttle linkage. the head is from steel wheel ranch and has a warranty but before i send it back i want to make sure that i really need to. thanks

jeff

Jeff, I just put the studs back into the block on the H I am rebuilding the engine on. There are several studs on the left side of the block that go through into the water jacket and some on the right that go through into the valve lifter cavity. I coated all these studs with a sealant before screwing them into the block to keep them from leaking like you must have. I know one was the stud that is in the throttle bracket. Roger

A little bit of comedy here,
Depends on how hard the wife whacked ya with the frying pan!!!!!
I would lean more towards the bolt situation previously listed, leaking past the threads and retorqueing after a warm up.

I agree with what is said. I'm sure steel wheel ranch magnifluxes, and pressure tests the heads before they sell them and put a warranty on them. Likely tested and found good before you got it. I'm not ruleing it as not being cracked, but would lean toward a head bolt or head gasket leaking.

I had a simular problem with my H pulling tractor. I had the head magnafluxed, and pressure tested, and put it back on and it still leaked. In the same place you mentioned. I removed the stud, and put thread sealer on the block end of the stud, and put a flat washer on the head and shot silicone in the head stud hole and tightend it up. It sealed it up, and has not leaked since. I have went to the extent of putting a pressure tester on the radiator cap to check for leakage internally, and had none. More than likely, it is comming out of the block side of the stud through the threads and just filling up with antifreeze when the pressure builds in the system. Hope this helps, ChadS

thanks for the advice. i bet you are right about that. i didn't realize that the studs went down into the blocks water jacket. can you take one stud out without removing the head or will that mess things up? how would you all go about fixin the problem? thanks again!

Just remove the headbolt and put some silicone on the threads that go into the block and re-install. If you are careful you can remove all the bolts without taking the head off thereby saving the gasket. Be sure to re-torque the headbolts after a few hours run time.

Check your engine cylinder head assy diagram form the parts manual. There is a copper or brass washer that goes under one or two of those cylinder head nuts- I can't remember which ones though.

I'd call Steel Wheel Ranch, and give them a heads up. They may have a solution for you. Did you retorque the head bolts after it warmed up?
