Cub overheating

I bought a Cub in November just when the weather was getting chilly and now I'm fired up about spring so I can get to work on it. It starts and runs like a champ, but when I engage the belly mower and get it under the slightest of load, it will boil water from the radiator within a minute. Short of sharpening the blades (they need it), is there anything else I need to check on? The guy I bought it from rebuilt the engine and I assumed he flushed the cooling system. The water appears clean in the radiator. Thanks for your help!

Your radiator is too full, fill to about four inches from top, the coolent does expand that much.

Peabody: I can also vouch for what Bigdog said--my Cub did the same thing last spring. I had checked the coolant strength and filled the radiator before parking it for the winter, and when Spring came, it boiled out coolant shortly after engaging the mower. Once the excess coolant had boiled off, I cleaned up the overflow area (so I could see if more was leaking out) and ran it the rest of the summer with no overflow problems. Just keep an eye on the level, and don't add more until it's had a chance to find its preferred level.

Most likely, you have the radiator over-filled. Go ahead and run the tractor and allow it to overflow. Just keep an eye on the level. Most cubs will find their own level for coolant, usually about 2" below the fill neck. When it finds it's level, it will stop over-flowing. As long as the level does not go below the top of the radiator core, it's OK.

Well, it's good to see that the concensus is that it is something as simple as draining the radiator a little. Thanks for all the help, guys!
