Ok. Is this as involved a proceedure as it looks like its going to be? If anyone has done this before, I would appreciate a description of how to proceed and any tricks for not screwing up. I have to change both sides.

Rick

Rick: I have done this job and my first concern has always been jacking of tractor and stability in that position. I always cut couple wooden wedges and drive them in between front axle and bumper on the front axle pivot. This puts the stability on front axle and wheels. I am always concerned when you remove the right wheel and final drive that tractor may tip.

I remove the wheel right down to hub. I then place a pallet jack perpendicular to tractor and so you can block on each fork of jack to front and rear of final drive. Also put cross blocking under axle hub, this will keep final drive balanced. Remove bolts from final drive at top. You will need to start it with a pry bar as there are dowells on final drive, at point where it connects to tractor. With the casting sitting on the jack it makes reinstalling very easy.

I did my AV last week, I would recomend you change the axle seals while you are in there any-way,they usually leak a bit after 50 years. They cost me $15.00 each. It took me a day by myself to change. The axle housing weighs about 100lb.,you should have a little shop crane or a buddy or two to help lift off and on. It isn't as bad a job as it looks, very staight forward. I also replaced the clevise forks on the brake rod for easy adjusting, and all of the fine thead hardware. good luck.

Thanks for the responces. I'll do this closer to warmer weather when I can paint too. I have a loader and a shop hoist and most anything else I'll need. I didn't know if it meant pretty much disassembling the entire back end of the tractor. Are the rear axle seals and housing gaskets still available from CaseIH?

I got the seals from International, there is no gaskets. Looks scary, but no problem, realy...just think, you can stop that load of round bales now!

Yeah! And maybe the nitrous injectors will help me get it started moving again! Actually, I use the 460 for bale moving, so I'm set for that. Thanks,

Rick
