I just bought a very nice M with a DuAl 250 loader, what grade and type oil should use in the engine, the previous owner suggested striaght 30W non-detergent. Does that sound OK?? What fluid do I use ion the belly pump and in the rear diff? THX Rick

If the previous owner used non-detergent oil in the motor, I would also pull the valve cover to see how dirty the motor is. If there is a lot of sludge, it might be best to stick with a non-detergent until you rebuild the motor. Otherwise, the M has an oil filter and that would indicate a detergent oil would work the best in the engine.

It is money well spent to pick up an operators manual for your tractor.

Wow, lots of comments and fast...I am going to like this board! Anyway, yes I bought on owners/operators manual but it just specified 30W oil for above 32*, didn't say detergent or non. Sounds like it's not a life or death situation, either way. But yes, oils have come a LONG way since 1949, so I am still not sure which way to go. And the previous owner was a restorer/tinkerer with Farmalls, so he only owned the tractor about one year or less. I dont know what the other owners used for oil.

This is a great forum.

My understanding on oil comes from 'classic' British bikes. They used non-detergent oil before they had oil filters. The swarf was separated out in a sludge trap (usually in the crank), or simply settled in the oil tank. When an oil filter was added, detergent oil was used to carry the dirt around until it got to the filter. The motors seem to last a lot longer with detergent oils.

The problem with a motor without a sludge trap and non-detergent oil is that the muck settles out where ever the oil flow slows down i.e. the head. The trouble with using detergent oil in a dirty engine is that a blob a crud could come loose and block up an oil way with universally bad results.

I'd use a 30wt in the summer and switch to a 10w30 if you will use it much in the winter. Thats if you are in a cold area. Use IH Hy-tran in the hydraulic, or a good universal hydraulic oil. Use 80w90 in the rear end.

As with time and technology has increased. The oil that had been used may not be correct. Do some research. Pull the valve cover and see how dirty the motor is. That can be a big sign of what oil was run in it. Pen-crap and Havabrokerod are the worst oils in my opinion. Castrol is one of the best synthetics. Been using it in a Honda 3-wheeler since 1984, not a problem. Never even been in the shop. Use Delo-400 in our diesel equipment. Its an awesome oil. Most recently, we began testing Royal Purple synthetic. Customer has a service shop and wanted it put in his JD 1050 (yanmar). Sounded horrible when he brought it in. Oil was clean, but with Royal Purple it sounded like a sewing machine. It is smooth. Overall, as long as the oil meets and hopefully exceeds the standards, you should be ok.

Case I-H makes a low ash 30 for the farmall engines, it is recommended, but it is 15 bucks a small jug. We use the same as Jed. 5w40.

In this case, you should use what the previous owner had been using.

I agree strongly. If that engine always had non-det. and you switch it to det. you will get a lot of sludge floating around. I have seen a filter plugged in no time with s#$%. A buddy bought an old H at a sale and changed the oil to 15w40 (same as his diesle tractors),this stuff has extra cleaning capacity,he got himself into lots of trouble.
My local dealer promotes low ash single grade for the old girls and after a major o/h a straight grade detergent. He doesn't agree with my use of multigrade, but I use multi. in the tractors that run in the winter with fresh engins.

The M manual called for a straight 30W non detergent throughout. I use a 5w40.
