I just bought an MD this week. It starts on gas and then you switch it over to diesel. Is their anything I need to know about this engine? Does the ignition system shut off when you switch or how does this all work. The hand throttle is stuck but it has a foot throttle so you can still speed the engine up. Any ideas on what might be wrong? It has three point and the steering is tight. The tin work is real good also. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Never saw an MD with a foot throttle. When you shut down, you should switch back to gas first, then shut off the gas to the carb and let it run out. Always be sure to switch the lever back to diesel after it quits, as the decompression valves need to be on the seats as they cool to keep them from warping. As to the ignition, the switch is operated by the gas to diesel switch over lever. The switch is in a chamber in the front end of the intake manifold. Should be a wire going from the magneto to that chamber. The gas to diesel switch over lever does 4 things: 1) Opens/closes the decompression valves to the spark plug chambers to change the compression ratio for gas or diesel operation. 2)changes butterfly valves in the manifold to send air (or shut it off) through the carburetor. 3)Raises/releases the carburetor float to shut off gas flow when in the diesel position. 4) Shuts off the ignition (grounds the magneto) when in the diesel position. As to your hand throttle being stuck, the throttle and switch over device located on the left hand side of the engine block has a "clutch" that is adjustable to adjust the throttle tension. That clutch is there to eliminate any play in the speed control linkage to reduce surging. Usually these are pretty tight and it takes a strong arm to change the speed control setting. By the way, how are you shutting it off it the hand throttle control is stuck?? Can you do that with the foot throttle?? Usual way to shut off the diesel is to push the hand throttle all the way down to the shut off position.

Haas, This write-up of yours reminded me of a problem I had with my MD. After adjusting the throttle friction brake per what I thought it said in the manual, I could hardly move the throttle. So I decided to loosen the tension ring on the back side. I had a hard time getting to that ring to loosen it as there is very little space between it and the block plus all the other obstructions. I finally used a needle nose Vise-grip, but it was difficult as I could only turn it about a 1/16 turn per bite of the wrench. Is there a better way to do that as I still need to loosen mine up some? Never have fooled with this adjustment on my MD. I think these are supposed to be fairly stiff. I grew up on one of these and the speed control lever on it was always stiff. The one I have now is the same. That nut is not the only think on that tractor hard to get to. Have you ever taken the carb off??

Congratulations on your purchase! These are great old tractors. In answer, yes the ignition shuts off when you switch over to diesel.Unless there is somthing bent, you should be able to free up the throttle control with penetrant. The whole linkage system is fairly involved, I would suggest getting an owners manual, shop manual, and a parts manual. IMHO it's money well spent.
