i am wanting to sell my H, but it wont start without literaly charging the battery 7+ times! I have new spark plugs, and new wires. I have heard of the points giving trouble, where are they and how to test? People always say that the timing could be off, how is that changed? I have a diognostic tester for gas engines, and need to know what to test, it is right around zero right now, but will warm to about 40 on tuesday. Another thing, i posted it before, but it is for sale once it is running. It has all new rubber, automotive paint, 12 Volt, Overhauled engine in 2001 with new block, and aftermarket 3-point with double lift cylenders that can lift the front end. I am hoping to get 2500 for it, since the tires are almost worth that, plus a good tractor, I want to buy in place of it a M-TA or super M-TA

Bryce, the points in the distributer are located behind the plastic cover plate that is behind your distributor rotor. You might see if they are sticking. If they are you can give them several swipes with a point file. I think I checked mine for stick by cranking the motor over with the distributer cap off and seeing if they were opening and closing. Just be double sure your tractor is in neutral before you start cranking so it doesnt lurch. Hope this helps. RayA

Bryce,

I would suggest checking your valve lash....The book says .017 hot. The valves could very easily be too tight or too loose and that could keep it from starting....It would run OK once started, but I would suggest taking the valve cover off and checking the adjustment of your valves....Good luck with it. I would also say that there is a possibility you could have a leaking vent somewhere in your carburetor that is allowing air to enter the manifold without picking up fuel?? Check your gaskets and vents around the carburetor.....

Good luck with your tractor,

Every Farmall I've ever owned(M, A, 2 Cubs, 2 140's) had it's own way of starting. Mostly it was how much choke to use without flooding it. Proper cables to the starter, good grounds, a good starter, and a fresh battery are all required. The timing can't be off too much or it wouldn't run good once started. Is the spark a good blue color? Good luck with it!
