I have a question. I am looking at buying a Farmall Super C -1952 s # 139014. I am buying it for a christian ministry Weekend retreat center for children & youth. The owner says it runs great but it smokes.
Is the smoke a big problem. we do not have heavy duty work, would it last for a while, or it is a major job. What would be the worse case scenario and cost. Please advise on the tractors'attributes-strength, durability, etc. I am new in this arena. Thanks. God bless.

George-

I have a 52 Super C. I bought it from a co-worker in 1985 and it was my main tractor until just a couple of years ago. I used it for getting out firewood and bush hogging about 20 acres every year. I got another year out of it after it started smoking but if yours is doing what mine did, it probably needs an engine rebuild. This can be expensive if you have all of the work done (parts and labor will probably run around $1000.00).

Jim, Before you tear into the gov. I would check the gov. rod itself. Take the cotter pin out of the back of the carb and make sure that your rod is allowing full rpm. It may take a little wd40 but you should be able to adjust it. Hope this helps ED

It could be any one of a number of problems. You may need to simply advance the timing, or you may need to rebuild the distributor. It could be in need of a valve grind job, or you may just need to check and adjust the valve clearance. Intake gaskets could be leaking. Carburetor may need adjusted, or totally rebuilt. And yes, it could be the governor.

Sounds like your govenor is not working properly. Sometimes the springs have a tendency to rust apart over the years. Good luck. Great tractors. BobG in VA
